Cortez Allen’s Knee May Be Worse Than We Think

by Steeldad

Like many of you, when I saw that Steelers’ cornerback Cortez Allen would not play today due to a knee issue I wasn’t all that surprised. I say this because it just seems to be something we expect to hear when it comes to Allen but what I’m also hearing might be worse.

I was told prior to kickoff that Allen’s knee injury might not be the type that just keeps him out a game. It sounds very much like a chronic injury. To translate; that means this is something that isn’t going away anytime soon. What that means for Allen right now is anyone’s guess but for the Steelers, it puts them in a difficult position.

Allen already collected a roster bonus of $3 million back in the spring and will earn $2.631 million this season. If you’re thinking the Steelers should just cut him loose then you should think again. Letting Allen hit the bricks would result in cap hit of over $5 and a half million dollars.

Perhaps and I stress “perhaps,” it would be worth it to move on from what can only be described as a horrible mistake. The Steelers clearly flinched after losing out on Keenan Lewis who left the team for New Orleans. Concerned that Allen, who showed some promise, would do the same thing, they threw $24.6 million over four years at him.

We can argue till the cows come home as to whether there is still hope for Allen on this team but it may be a moot point. If his knee is indeed an issue that keeps lingering then Allen’s removal from the team may take care of itself.

Wow. This is not good news. Thanks for sharing.

Beyond the injury, Allen is somewhat of a mystery. He showed promise as a rookie. Looked great at the end of 2012. 2013 wasn’t so good, but he played a phenomenal game vs. Green Bay. Unfortunately, its been downhill since then.

You bet. His tackling became as poor as his coverage skills and that has ultimately been his downfall.

“after losing out on keenen lewis who left the team for New Orleans.” the steelers never intended on signing lewis no matter the price. first they signed william gay in the initial days of free agency. keenen lewis sat for two weeks without any offers made by anyone. After two weeks of free agency he then signed with the Saints for what now is approximately the 31st highest paid corner in football. He played that free agent year covering the teams best wideout like ike taylor used to and the team had no pass rush. In the season finale he played hurt and played well in a meaningless game against cleveland that fellow free agent mike wallace chose to sit out. I still cant for the life of me understand why they were so against signing k. lewis. Even if they mistook the market price and that was the reason they signed gay so quickly why not make an offer after it was clear his demand wasnt what they had thought. You are right however by saying the c. allen debacle was a direct result of the keenen lewis mistake.

[…] I told you when it was first diagnosed, the Cortez Allen knee issue is chronic. Don’t be surprised if this goes all season and continues to show just how badly the Steelers […]
