Deadline Day 2024: Will the Steelers Be Involved or Sit This One Out?

Most of you know that the trade deadline in the NFL isn’t nearly as exciting as it is in Major League Baseball or the National Basketball Association but recent years have seen a bit more interest and a bit more movement of players. The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in the exact same place they were way back in March; lacking a number two wide receiver.

So therefore the question is, will they be adding one or will they be adding a player period?

It’s no secret that Omar Khan has been active in looking for a number two wideout. Christian Kirk was thought to be the guy but then he broke his collarbone. Names like Davante Adams (he went to the NYJ) and Cooper Kupp (staying in LA) had many fans shooting for the moon. With those guys no longer options the Steelers are likely stuck in one of two lanes of traffic. Either they make a modest move for Adam Theilen or Darius Slayton or they shock everyone and look to land a much bigger fish… D.K. Metcalf perhaps?

The honest truth is that even if Khan lands someone, it will have been an organizational failure. They have known since they sent Diontae Johnson to Carolina back in March that they were going to need help. Yet they were unable to land anyone. The one draft pick they used on a receiver was for Michigan’s Roman Wilson. It was a curious pick since he’s mainly a slot receiver and it turned out quite awful as he’s had zero impact so far and has been hurt far more than he’s been healthy.

My gut feeling is that Khan will try to bring in a number of receivers but when the day ends, nothing will have changed. We won’t really know just how good or bad this inaction was until the season ends.
