Omar Khan Appears to be Suffering From ‘Artist’s Block’

Great writers who struggle to come up with content are known to have ‘Writer’s block.’ Artists who struggle to come up with new material suffer from ‘Artist’s block.’ So what do we call it when the Pittsburgh Steelers’ ‘Khan Artist’ – General Manager Omar Khan – can’t find a wide receiver? I’m not sure this has a title but what I am sure of is that Khan is struggling to find help on offense at a key position.

Making matters worse is that the main rival of the Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens, traded for former Steeler Diontae Johnson yesterday. League rules prohibit a team from trading for a player they just sent to another team so no, he wasn’t an option for Khan. But Diontae Johnson is where this entire mess began.

It became abundantly clear that Johnson wasn’t happy in Pittsburgh. Whether slapping quarterbacks or giving less effort than a sloth, it was obvious they needed to part ways with him. Once they did back in March, the clock started ticking on Khan to find a replacement. They brought in Van Jefferson, who admittedly has perked up a bit since Russell Wilson has been at QB, but was never really pictured to be the team’s true “number two wide receiver.”

So here we are now just a day or two away from November and the trade deadline. Khan has done nada… zip… zero to make the wide receiver room any better. Guys like DeAndre Hopkins have moved. Davonte Adams has moved and so has Amari Cooper. One could suggest that Khan just didn’t want to give up a lot in a trade and that’s fair. However, based on what these guys have been traded for? He could have easily made a move or two.

Cooper Kupp is no longer an option. The new flavor of the month is Tyreek Hill. Yeah, you read that right. There’s a rumor that the Steelers are interested in him as the Dolphins are close to starting a fire sale. Good luck with that.

The only thing that would make fans change their minds on how Khan has handled this would be a blockbuster move like the one above. I’m not ruling it out simply because I never say “never.” The likelihood however is slim. In fairness to Khan, he’s probably done a ton of work to make something happen yet nothing has. I guess it’s just a case of ‘artist’s block.’
