Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.
I’m wasting my breath – or in this case – my typing skills to tell you there is little to read into following the first day of camp for the quarterbacks. Mitchell Trubisky was average. Mason Rudolph was solid and Kenny Pickett looked like a rookie. Each guy had 12 reps in the team session. There was miscommunication. There were good throws. There were errant throws. There was an interception of Kenny Pickett by a guy named Carlins Platel. The highlight of the period was a 60-yard TD off a screen to Rookie Calvin Austin III. Why am I wasting my breath? Because I know like many fans you’ve already made up your minds as to who should be starting. My advice? RELAX. Let this thing play out. The guy who should be starting will rise to the top. If he doesn’t? Then get ready for a long, strange season.

Tidbits From Training Camp
We’ll talk more about the situation with Tyson Alualu on the podcast tonight… T.J. Watt looked like a man among boys in drills against the offense… Minkah Fitzpatrick was much more active than you may have though with him being on the PUP list… George Pickens makes some ridiculous catches… The practice period was cut short due to the threat of thunderstorms.
Diontae
I’m not sure how this is going to go in comparison to how T.J. Watt ran his “hold-in” last year but it appears Diontae Johnson is doing the same thing. Johnson spent the bulk of practice on the sidelines doing individual work. The Steelers have cap room but the market for wide receivers is ridiculously high – too high in the estimation of the team – to pay Johnson what he’s likely asking. My gut feeling right now is that this doesn’t get done and the ball will be in his court.
