SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Set In Stone” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

More and more we have to take what team officials say with a grain of salt. We have to understand that when coaches or general managers make statements, they aren’t always set in stone or guaranteed to happen. When Steelers’ General Manager Kevin Colbert said yesterday that if the season started right now Mason Rudolph would be the starter, many fans lost their damn minds. Why do people get so bent out of shape? For starters, we still have trades, free agency and the draft to get through. If you’re on “Team Rudy” then things are looking good for you. When OTAs begin, Rudy will be the man to beat. If you’re on “Team Anyone But Rudy” then don’t worry, you have plenty of time to see Colbert and company bring in competition or better yet, someone that will immediately jump to the head of the class. Regardless of where your loyalties are there’s still a lot of time for change. And stop thinking that everything these guys say is gold.

Tweet of the Day… I feel this tweet.

Draft Grades

You’re starting to see some grades on prominent players in this year’s draft come out and of special note is the quarterback position. Most grades (by accounts or people I trust) do not have any of this year’s QBs above 6.50. For reference, Trevor Lawrence was in the 7.50 range on most draft grades last year. Grades don’t really mean anything in the long run, ask the Patriots and Tom Brady, but they do provide certain criteria to look for in a prospect. The Steelers tend to rely more on athletic scores like SPARQ which can help determine where a guy is and where he could be. Even those scores have proven to be wrong though. Does Jarvis Jones ring a bell?

D-Line Depth

I saw something over the weekend that I’m struggling to understand. It suggested that the Steelers have ‘great’ depth on their defensive line. Cam Heyward will be 33 years old when the 2022 season starts. Tyson Alualu, if he returns, will be 35 and coming off a broken ankle. Isaiahh Loudermilk is young and showed solid improvement all season long and Montravious Adams, if they can re-sign him, has solid potential as well. Stephon Tuitt is a major question mark who right now we can’t rely on and as far as everyone else? This team needs a massive a infusion of talent and youth on the D-Line. It’s nowhere near the quality some believe it to be.
