Colbert Addresses Several Key Topics for the 2022 Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers’ outgoing General Manager Kevin Colbert spoke to the media today in Pittsburgh. With just a couple of months left in his reign there were many important issues that Steelers Nation was interested in hearing about and Colbert didn’t disappoint.

On the QBs…

Colbert said, “As of right now if we started the season today Mason Rudolph would be the starter.” I’m not sure why anyone would be surprised or be upset by this. Yet there was no shortage of outrage on social media which I just don’t understand. Did fans think he was going to say something different? As of right now, Rudolph is in fact the their best option at quarterback. There is still free agency and the draft and there’s always the possibility of a trade too but until any of those things happen it’s Rudy’s show.

On Stephon Tuitt…

Colbert says they have spoken with Tuitt and are open to welcoming him back in 2022. I don’t think that’s much of an endorsement for anything one way or another. I understand the physical, emotional and mental toll last year took on Tuitt but until I see him on the field I’m not going to get overly excited about this.

On Devin Bush’s Fifth Year Option…

Colbert said they haven’t made a decision on that yet. My assumption is that they have actually made a decision but will wait for input from Brian Flores.

Speaking of Flores

“We hired a very good, quality defensive coach that can maybe help us win games.”

On the Draft…

Colbert sees the positions of wide receiver, offensive tackle, EDGE and cornerback as the deepest in this year’s NFL Draft. Three of those four (and you could argue EDGE depth as well) are positions the Steelers must upgrade. Now whether they do that all in the Draft is unknown. There will be plenty of free agent options here as well.

We also learned that Colbert announced to who we believe are Art Rooney II and Mike Tomlin, his intentions to retire as far back as last May. He didn’t divulge any information on who his replacement would be either. It’s more than likely we’ll hear more from Colbert when the Combine begins March 1st.
