Drama Just Can’t Seem to Leave the Steelers Can It?

Drama. It might be what your favorite television show is about or might be how you describe your neighborhood. For whatever reason, drama follows the Pittsburgh Steelers and to be honest, I don’t think it’s created by them. Instead, it’s created by the media and the fans and as Phase Three of OTAs got underway today, the drama was everywhere.

Start with the fact that Stephon Tuitt was not in attendance. Nevermind the fact he is not yet required to be there yet. That will come when the mandatory three-day mini-camp will be held. Both Cam Heyward and Tyson Alualu told the media that they expected Tuitt to return for the season. This didn’t stop any of us from rampant speculation. Will he play? Won’t he play? What will the team do with him? Steeler Nation was truly in its glory on social media with this one.

Oh but then we got to the quarterback issue. Mitchell Trubisky was asked about whether or not the Steelers told him they were drafting a QB when he decided to sign with him. There were reports that he was told “If Kenny Pickett is there, we’re drafting him.” He made it clear today he wasn’t told anything regarding that. And in all seriousness, the Steelers would never tell a free agent what their draft plan was.

That part is on Trubisky and his agent. They’re the ones who have to assess the situation. I highly doubt promises were made about starting or playing time. Did the Steelers tell him he’d compete for the starting job? I have no doubt they did but telling him they were drafting a specific player is not what they do. But hey, don’t let a good story get in the way of the truth.

The last bit of drama surrounded Diontae Johnson. Just days after getting hammered in the court of public opinion for failing to show at his own youth football camp, Johnson was a no-show for phase three. Again, as is the case with Tuitt, he’s not required to be there yet. The problem is that Johnson is entering the final year of his rookie deal and he’s seeing other receivers sign deals for ridiculous amounts of money. Receivers in fact that he is statistically better than. Therefore, why wouldn’t DJ want a new deal?

Should he be absent for the mandatory mini-camp then we can safely assume he’s going to hold out. Which of course would just add to the drama that surrounds this team. And it’s just May!
