SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “What Might Have Been” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

There used to be a saying, “Never speak ill of the dead.” In today’s world, that saying isn’t followed or respected much anymore. With the official coroner’s report out from Broward County Florida, we now know more about the death of Steelers’ QB Dwayne Haskins and of course, people are speaking “ill.” His blood alcohol content was .24 and he also had ketamine in his system as well. There are other issues that were in play that evening as well but I’m not getting into those in this space here. I will not get on my soap box either because I did stupid things in my 20’s and I wasn’t under the microscope either as a professional athlete. Did the Steelers know that Haskins was using ketamine? Was he an alcoholic? Were the Steelers and Mike Tomlin trying to rehabilitate him? These are all fair questions to ask and at the end of the day they no longer matter. I am grateful that Haskins did not hurt anyone else that night and I wish he would have received the help he needed. Like many of you, I will always wonder what might have been with him. Such a talented passer with a rocket arm… Do not pile on today like so many others. Let the young man rest in peace and let his family grieve. For they too are wondering “what might have been.”

Remember This Day…

As the Steelers begin Phase Three of their 2022 OTAs, this could be a day to remember years from now. That’s because today is the day that Kenny Pickett, the first round selection by the Steelers, truly begins his journey. Whether he is the opening day starter in September is entirely up to him. Can he grasp the playbook? Will all of that college experience pay dividends? Will he be able to perform better than Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph? All of those and many more questions will start being answered today.

Tweet of the Day… I agree with Neal here. If you didn’t catch this, Diontae Johnson was not at his own football camp for kids.

The Podcast

We are back to our regular Thursday evening time slot this week. After battling Covid and being busier than I had planned, things should be back to normal. If you missed last week’s episode, here it is! The SCB Steelers Podcast 270 presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida.

The Wide Receiver Room

I will be very surprised if the Steelers do not add a veteran wide receiver to this current stable of receivers. There’s no question that this room has tons of talent but when DJ is your “elder statesman” that’s a problem. That’s not a knock on him, it’s just that you typically like a Darrius Heyward-Bey or Jerricho Cotchery type in that room. My concern is how long the team may wait to do it but they may be forced to wait until cuts start happening later in the summer.
