Former Chargers Safety Eric Weddle has been connected to the Pittsburgh Steelers a lot this off-season.
Many, including myself, felt that may be a pipe dream. The Steelers just don’t ever sign “big names” like Weddle in free agency.
However, some things have happened in the past week that are making it feel like more of a reality, and the hype reached a boiling point today in an online chat with Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Gerry Dulac.
Dulac answered a range of questions, but a few in particular seemed to hint at the team adding Weddle soon if you read between the lines. Here are the pertinent questions and answers…
- Gerry do you think the Steelers will at least make a move for Weedle[sic]?
Dulac: All I can tell you is Tomlin really likes him. And the Steelers have always liked Ladarius Green since he visited them before his draft. Get it?
- Are you surprised you haven’t heard any rumors of Weddle looking anywhere in the past couple days, considering he’s one of the top safetys[sic]?
Dulac: Give it a little more time….
- Assuming the Green signing occurs, do you expect any outside FA’s being signed by the Steelers today?
Dulac: There could be one more….
- ONE more? Gerry, are you alluding to one in particular?
Again, maybe I’m reading too much into this but those “…” after the answers seem to be alluding to something. And on the last question, Gerry could’ve gave a generic answer, but seems to be thinking about “one more” in particular.
Earlier in the week, in a Monday Morning QB column Weddle mentioned the Steelers specifically as one of 4 teams he would be interested in playing for.
Weddle himself also responded to a pretty humorous post from a Steelers fan on twitter begging him to come to Pittsburgh. You can see the response and the note to Weddle here…

None of these things may mean anything, but as they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire.
I’m seeing a lot of Black and Gold smoke around the 3 time pro bowl safety.
