SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: A Blast From Boykin

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday Morning Steelers’ Fans! I hope the sting of Sunday’s loss has gone away for the most part as we turn our attention to the next game at home against the Chiefs.

The Steelers have always relied on strong leadership in their locker room and it sounds like they are getting it again at least for the time being. Following the 34-3 loss to the Eagles, both Cam Heyward and William Gay spoke and they made it clear there should be no finger pointing. Mike Tomlin is the type of coach who relies heavily on his veteran players to lead and both Heyward and Gay living up to that standard.

Former Steeler Brandon Boykin, who the Steelers traded a fifth round pick for just prior to last season and then rarely played, had an interesting comment on Twitter this week.

As many of you know, we here at SCB were strong supporters of getting Boykin more playing time last year. Unfortunately, there were a series of things that prevented that and ultimately Boykin headed off into free agency. Steelers’ Defensive Backs Coach Carnell Lake revealed in a candid moment that Boykin had a hip issue that wasn’t going to get better. Regardless, I think this is a bit of a “sour grapes” tweet by Boykin. Justin Gilbert has been in Pittsburgh for less than four weeks so I’m going to give the Steelers the benefit of the doubt on not playing him in the secondary yet. Besides, Gilbert’s film isn’t all that impressive to be honest.

Mike Tomlin Presser today at Noon. Looking for some injury updates and I’ll get those to you as soon as I can.

Tweet (#2) of the Day… Former Steeler and former Hofstra football star Willie Colon was watching the debate.

Le’Veon Bell is back and I for one hope he lives up to his most recent words.

The scene last evening in Miami was incredible. Very moving to see Marlins players, then Mets’ players around the pitcher’s mound honoring Jose Fernandez. And then Dee Gordon hits his very first home run in the team’s first at-bat??? Just amazing.

Speaking of Justin Gilbert. He really needs a shot at returning kickoffs. Both Sammie Coates and Fitzgerald Toussaint are decent, but they don’t make great decisions on when to come out of the end zone. Field position is so important too. Gotta get better options back there.

I’m probably being optimistic here but I really think Markus Wheaton plays better on Sunday. The three drops just aren’t like him.
