WPIAL 2020 Week 4 Results

The WPIAL football season has hit the midpoint. Due to the COVID pandemic this season had only 7 weeks, so Week 4 is the exact middle of the year. As we hit the homestretch, most teams are playing conference opponents from here on out. Here are the final scores and some game notes from all of tonight’s action.

Thursday Games

Class 5A

Peters Twp 28, Upper St Clair 21 – In a back-and-forth game, Peters Twp edged neighboring Upper St Clair. A late TD run by QB Logan Pfeuffer followed by a fake punt conversion by Corbin Hondru sealed the win for the Indians.

Class 3A

Central Valley 50, Quaker Valley 0 – The defending 3A Champions won by Mercy Rule for the fourth time this season. Should the 2016 Steel Valley “Mercy Boys” squad be put on alert?

Friday Games

Class 6A

Central Catholic 33, Seneca Valley 7 – Playing without star RB Eddy Tillman, Central Catholic’s defense shut down Seneca Valley’s running game. Gannon Carothers scored on a pick-six in the first half and on a 70-yard run in the second half to put the game away for the Vikings.

North Allegheny 14, Mt Lebanon 11 – Mt. Lebanon held a 3-0 lead at halftime but North Allegheny controlled the second half until a blocked punt set up Mt. Lebanon to cut the lead to 3.

Norwin 28, Baldwin 12 – Baldwin’s first game against a 6A opponent this season ended in disappointment as Norwin won their first game of the season.

Canon-McMillan 45, Hempfield 14 – Ryan Angott scored 5 touchdowns to lead the Big Macs to victory and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Class 5A

South Fayette 28, Moon 13 – South Fayette hit big plays in the passing game with Naman Alemada throwing for 3 TDs to snap the Lions 2-game losing skid.

West Allegheny 17, Bethel Park 7 – A week after setting school passing records, Gavin Miller threw for 135 yards and 2 TDs to lead West Allegheny past Bethel Park.

Penn-Trafford 38, Woodland Hills 6 – Penn-Trafford stormed past Woody High as Ethan Carr threw for 2 TDs and ran for 2 more. The Warriors ran for over 300 yards as a team.

Franklin Regional 42, Connellsville 21– Franklin Regional improves to 3-1 overall with a dominant win over Connellsville.

North Hills 42, Kiski 20

Fox Chapel 36, Shaler 21 – Fox Chapel got their first victory of the season in a battle of winless teams in the Northeast Conference.

Class 4A

Belle Vernon 49, Laurel Highlands 0 – Belle Vernon pitches their third shutout in 4 games this season.

McKeesport 54, Ringgold 0

Trinity 32, West Mifflin 5 – Micah Finley caught three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Trinity to victory.

Plum 20, Highlands 7 – The Mustangs are 4-0 and now have a commanding lead atop the Greater Allegheny Conference.

Mars 27, Armstrong 7 – Teddy Ruffner ran for 218 yards and 2 TDs to lead the Fightin’ Planets to victory.

Hampton 42, Greensburg Salem 9 – Hampton won their 3rd game of the season, the first time since 2015 the Talbots have won more than 2 games in a year.

Indiana 29, Knoch 6 – Indiana led 22-0 at halftime with all of their points coming off of Knoch turnovers.

Chartiers Valley 41, Blackhawk 14 – Chartiers Valley moves to 4-0 with a big win over Blackhawk. The Colts will take on Aliquippa next week with the Conference Title on the line.

Aliquippa 50, Beaver 7

Montour 47, New Castle 22 – Montour blew out rival New Castle to get right back into the thick of the Parkway Conference race.

Class 3A

North Catholic 66, Burrell 8 – North Catholic surpassed the 50-point mark for the third time this season.

East Allegheny 35, Deer Lakes 0 – East Allegheny bounced back from their loss to North Catholic to cruise past winless Deer Lakes.

Elizabeth Forward 35, South Park 0 – Warriors QB Evan Lewis ran for 3 TDs and threw for 2 more. Elizabeth Forward’s defense was once again dominant as they staked their claim to the top spot in the Interstate Conference.

South Allegheny 63, Brownsville 16

Mt Pleasant 43, Yough 32 – A week after beating Southmoreland 13-10, the Vikings won a high-scoring battle with Yough to put themselves in position to win the Conference title in two weeks against Elizabeth Forward.

Keystone Oaks 20, Avonworth 13 – A game featuring two teams with a lot of offensive firepower wound up being a defensive battle. Logan Shrubb ran for 2 TDs and ran for another. Keystone Oaks will take on Central Valley with the Conference Title on the line next week.

Hopewell 42, Ambridge 7 – The Bridgers WPIAL-leading conference losing streak stretches to 32 games.

Southmoreland 28, Derry 20 – The Scotties topped Derry in non-conference play.

Class 2A

Serra Catholic 54, Shady Side Academy 14 – Serra Catholic topped 50 points once again

Ligonier Valley 28, Steel Valley 26

Washington 41, Beth-Center 6

Frazier 40, Waynesburg 14 – Frazier bounced back from their loss to McGuffey thanks to Kenny Fine’s return to the lineup.

Chartiers-Houston 48, Charleroi 13 – Jimmy Sadler Jr scored 3 TDs, including dashes of 70 and 80 yards, to carry the Bucs past Charleroi. Chartiers-Houston’s defense also scored on two pick-sixes.

Beaver Falls 44, New Brighton 15 – New Brighton scored first but after that it was all Beaver Falls. Shileak Livingston scored twice and the Tigers defense had two pick-sixes to return the Little Brown Jug to Beaver Falls.

Riverside 34, Mohawk 20 – The Panthers got their first win of the season, topping Mohawk.

Neshannock 45, Ellwood City 0 – Neshannock has won 3 in a row after dropping the season-opener to Laurel. Ellwood City has now lost 14 games in a row.

Freedom 14, Laurel 7 – In another low-scoring, defensive battle in the Midwestern Conference, Freedom edged Laurel.

Brentwood 40, Carlynton 21 – Brentwood pulled away in the second half to stay atop the Three Rivers Conference.

Sto-Rox 23, South Side Beaver 15

Class 1A

Rochester 47, OLSH 21 – A monster game from Rashawn Reid (6 TDs) snapped Rochester’s 4-game losing streak to OLSH.

Shenango 48, Burgettstown 7 – Shenango and Rochester are tied atop the Big Seven Conference.

Union 20, Cornell 18 (OT) – The game was tied at 12 and went to overtime where Union scored first and converted a two point try. Cornell scored on their first play of overtime but Union’s defense came up with a stop on the two-point try, sealing the win for the Scotties.

Fort Cherry 38, Northgate 8 – In a battle between teams who had both lost over 20 consecutive games, Fort Cherry snapped their 21-game losing streak. Northgate, who has the second-longest losing streak in the WPIAL, saw their streak extended to 28 games.

Jeannette 60, Leechburg 14 – Jeannette freshman QB Brad Birch threw for 6 TDs to carry the Jayhawks past Leechburg.

Springdale 45, GCC 22 – Another big game for Logan Dexter (over 200 yards of total offense) kept the Dynamos undefeated and in position to battle Clairton and Jeannette for the conference crown.

Imani 48, Riverview 25 – Imani snapped a 14-game losing streak with a big win over Riverview.

California 55, Avella 16 – California jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter with 3 TDs from Jaedan Zuzak (who finished with 268 yards) and held off Avella’s comeback attempts by continuing to put points on the board.

Carmichaels 26, West Greene 7 – A big win for Carmichaels over defending Tri-County South Conference Champions West Greene. The Mighty Mikes will face off with California in two weeks with the conference title on the line.

Jefferson-Morgan 40, Bentworth 34 

Mapletown 30, Monessen 6 – In a battle of winless teams, Mapletown defeats Monessen.
