SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Trading Down” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Every, single year the vast majority of us beg and plead with Kevin Colbert to trade down in the draft and accumulate more picks. If only it were that easy… In his 22 years as the General Manager, Colbert has NEVER traded down in the first round. This leaves many to ask why? First and most importantly, it takes two to tango. If you don’t have a trade partner then it doesn’t matter what your wishes or intentions are. You are stuck with the position you’re in. Secondly, Colbert appears to be of the mindset that the team already knows who it wants. Therefore, why risk moving down and perhaps missing out on the guy you really wanted. With just six selections in this draft, trading down would be an excellent idea. Even if you get some picks for next year’s draft I would be OK with that. The Pittsburgh Steelers as currently constructed are not a “player or two away from contending for a Super Bowl.” That’s why I’m of the mind that trading down and gaining more picks is an even more prudent idea than perhaps in other years. I’m a firm believer in “never say never.” But if ever there were a year to slide down this is it.

The Podcast

In case you missed last week’s episode of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc… We discussed the defensive line and inside linebackers in the draft. Plus we also took some time to remember Dan Rooney who passed five years ago last week and of course Dwayne Haskins as well. Great stuff as always!!

Tweet of the Day… I’ll say this for Baker. He played through a torn labrum most of last season. Many say, “yeah but that was his non-throwing shoulder.” Believe me, because I’ve been there, injuries to your ‘non-throwing shoulder’ still greatly impact your ability. And no, this doesn’t mean I want him on the Steelers.

Trade DJ?

One of my more enjoyable pastimes is reading Ed Bouchette’s mailbag over at The Athletic. Some of the things people ask are truly remarkable. One item this week I found thought-provoking. Should the Steelers trade Diontae Johnson? On one hand, he’s going to be worth far more than he was when the season ended. The idiots down in Jacksonville giving Christian Kirk $20 million per season set off a chain of huge spending on receivers. My guess is that the Steelers don’t see Johnson as that valuable of a player but the market is what it is. So ultimately, are the Steelers willing to pay him that much? On the other hand, trading him would garner some mid-round picks likely. As I mentioned above, the more picks the better, but then a real void in the receiver room becomes larger with just Chase Claypool returning. It’s an interesting proposition but I don’t see it happening. If anything, look for DJ to be tagged next season.

And So It Begins…

Today the Steelers begin their offseason conditioning program. OTAs will follow May 24-26, May 31-June 2, June 6-9 and then things will conclude with mini-camp June 14-16. After that, awaits Training Camp. My advice to everyone is to relax when you hear who isn’t or who is at conditioning or OTAs. There are many factors that contribute to either case.
