SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Not Happening” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Later this week, the 2022 NFL season will officially begin. That also means the free agency period begins as well. Those things are secondary to what many Steelers fans really want, which is Deshaun Watson. As I said last week, this isn’t happening. Oh I know, the criminal cases aren’t proceeding based on lack of evidence. Apparently this meant to fans that the door was wide open to trade for Watson. While the criminal phase seems over, there will no doubt be any number of civil cases brought against the talented quarterback. There is also every expectation that he’s going to be suspended as well. How long? I’ve heard anywhere from four games to as high as ten. Regardless, the Texans want three first round picks and that’s just a starting point. The fact that Kevin Colbert traded a first for Minkah Fitzpatrick now haunts this organization. Fans believe it has opened the door for the team to suddenly turn into your Madden franchise. That’s just not going to happen. I get the idea that trading the three first rounders is actually like trading a first (this year’s pick at 20) and then two “seconds.” This assumes that Watson leads the Steelers to the Super Bowl so they pick at 31 or 32. This “assumes” an awful lot doesn’t it? Never mind that the Steelers still have significant holes to fill on both offense and defense because apparently Watson’s presence will make those needs obsolete. We all understand that having a great QB is a must if you expect to win consistently but you still need to block and tackle too. The sooner fans grasp that isn’t happening the better we will all be.

Are you really surprised?

On a day that is supposed to belong to college basketball and March Madness, Tom Brady immediately put those things on the back burner by announcing he was returning to the Buccaneers. I wish I could tell you I was surprised by this but I’m not. Football is Brady’s drug. He needs it until he knows he can’t do it anymore. He is still one of the top 15 QBs in the league even at his age so why not keep playing?

Tweet of the Day… Not surprised by this at all either.

Re-Signings of Note

Last week the Steelers retained both Miles Killabrew and Arthur Maulet by signing them to new deals. Guys like Killabrew are a must. Not only is he an ace on Special Teams but he also played surprisingly well when called upon to play defense. If he’s asked to be a long-term starter that’s not going to work but in some sub packages and for a play or two he more than proved himself. Maulet signed a two-year deal to remain with the team. As of right now he will be penciled into the Nickel spot. Admittedly he played better towards the end of the season but if the Steelers can upgrade here they most definitely will.

Bracketology

Big shout out to Ian, our man of all seasons, five tool player etc… He nailed 66 of the 68 teams in the NCAA Basketball field. He also correctly 47 of the exact seeds and was one seed away on 17 others. Now let’s see how good he is at picking the Final Four!

Minkah and Diontae

In the case of Diontae Johnson I think, based on the numbers other receivers are getting, will come in around $15 million per season. I believe this to be more than fair. In the case of Minkah Fitzpatrick, if you look at a guy like Justin Simmons of Denver, that’s probably a comparison worth making. His deal is four years for $61 million and $35 million guaranteed. Either way, these deals are unlikely to be done until the time Training Camp rolls around.
