SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “No Wonder” Edition

Big Ben

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

There are a lot of fans out there who get upset when players give canned responses to questions or when they bitch about the questions they are asked. I get that, I’ve said the same things many times too but I also realize that many players have every right to get frustrated. Ben Roethlisberger is a perfect example of this. When he showed up to Training Camp he was wearing a t-shirt with the word “different” on it. Below that were small initials “MT” as well. Does it surprise you that Big Ben was asked about the shirt yesterday during his first time in front of reporters? The only reason the question was asked was to create a story or talking point or better yet, maybe some drama! The shirt was actually given to him by a Christian musician named Micah Tyler. That’s it. That’s the story. Do we all feel better now that there wasn’t some “hidden agenda” here? Are people disappointed this wasn’t a shirt aimed at critics or aimed at the Browns or Ravens? It’s no wonder that is exactly why players get frustrated with questions that don’t always pertain to their job. Perhaps in the future Seven will just wear plain shirts so we don’t hurt ourselves trying to think up reasons for what he’s wearing. Oh and if he’s wearing it to support the artist? That’s his choice!

NFL Vaccine Announcement

I’m not going to spend a lot of time here because I don’t want this to be a political thing. The NFL announced yesterday that teams who have a Covid-19 breakout that forces a game to not be played, that team will FORFEIT the game. That’s right, it will go in the books as a loss. Taking it a step further, Tom Pelissaro reported players may face the possibility of not being paid for that week as well. The league cannot tell you you have to get vaccinated but it can set up requirements that will make it hard not to be. This isn’t about right or left, conservative or liberal. This is about money. Period. End of Report.

Camp Comments

Lots of talk about Kendrick Green being plugged in as the first team center yesterday. First of all, despite the fact he was one of the last players in the NFL to sign his rookie deal, he didn’t miss any OTAs or workouts so it isn’t like he was holding out. Mike Tomlin claims he’s in that position so that he’s ready for the Hall of Fame Game. That may be true but he’s the odds on favorite to start opening day no doubt in my mind… Big Ben and Tomlin seemed to contradict each other about the issues of learning the new offense. Tomlin feels that it shouldn’t be that difficult while Roethlisberger definitely said it will take some time for everyone to be on the same page… New Steeler Melvin Ingram was wearing number 8. Yep, an outside linebacker wearing Tommy Maddox’s old number. You’ll recall the league has completely changed it’s numbering system allowing much more freedom for players.
