Good Friday to you Steelers fans.
I was once told that every rule has an exception. I’ve learned however that the National Football League has rules that seemingly have no exceptions or worse yet, have several different interpretations that don’t even make sense. Are you confused by what I just said? That was my point. There are rules in the NFL that make little sense or are so subjective that they are affecting the outcomes of games. This edition of “Quick Hitters” is about the rules and those that need to be addressed.
False Starts
The NFL has to address this. The LA Rams should have been flagged for a false start on third and goal on their game-winning drive. Both tackles, among others, were easily in motion before the snap. This is not a team “getting off the ball quickly” either. These are false starts and are being allowed to happen because they favor the offense and scoring. Regardless, it’s a problem.
Defensive Pass Interference
Look, this is never going to be perfect and we all have to accept that but what has to change is the spot foul. It’s time to adopt the college rule of 15-yards. Far too long these penalties have been killers and bail out offenses too much. Ask Joe Flacco. Not only that but they flip field position often altering the course of games.
Tweet of the Day… She’s not wrong.

Delay of Game
We first have to understand that the clock we see on TV isn’t always perfectly in time with the one the officials see. However, officials have allowed this to become way too subjective. We see every week when the clock hits zero and the ball still isn’t snapped but there’s no call. This is yet another one where there will always be a margin of error but it’s gotten way out of hand in recent years and this year was the capper.
Overtime
We cannot allow the date of postseason games to come down to a coin flip. Sure, the easy answer is “well, the defense has to make a stop!” When the game has been altered so much to favor the offense at nearly every turn then we have to allow both offenses to touch the ball. To me it’s really simple for the postseason. Put 15 minutes on the clock. Flip the coin. Teams each get a possession and must go for two after each touchdown. If still tied after each team has a possession then you play sudden death. It’s really not that hard. I would not change anything in the regular season.
