Overthinking the Steelers’ Quarterback Situation is What We Do

Sometimes we can just think too much as human beings. Pretty deep thought to start out right? But when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers and their quarterback situation in the post Ben Roethlisberger era, I believe we are definitely overthinking this. Now, if you just want to jump “all-in” on one of the quarterbacks in this draft then check out the NFL Draft Odds right here. Or maybe you’re thinking the Steelers will add a free agent to compete with both Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. The third option is a trade which has led to far-fetched ideas like this one.

Carson Wentz has a cap hit of over $28 million in 2022. The Steelers front office can be accused of some poor decisions in the past but this would border on insanity. Let’s also not forget that Wentz stinks.

Much of our overthinking comes from the fact that Kevin Colbert is retiring after the draft. This is leading many to think that his expertise in selecting the team’s next QB is of vital importance. Let’s revisit some of Colbert’s past QB draft selections though shall we?

You already know about Rudolph but then there are guys like Landry Jones who at best was a solid spot starter. Josh Dobbs will best be known as the guy who Big Ben trusted the most on the bench. Then there’s Dennis Dixon and Omar Jacobs. Granted, none of these QBs were really thought to be anything more than backups with the exception of Rudolph (time will tell if it hasn’t already) but I honestly believe Colbert isn’t drafting a QB in round one this year. There isn’t a ‘Ben Roethlisberger’ sitting there in the first round as there was in 2004.

Colbert knows as well as anyone that new general managers typically like to bring in their own QBs. This isn’t a concrete fact for everyone but more often than not it rings true.

So where does this leave the Steelers? Or perhaps to word it better, where does it leave the fans? There isn’t a QB in this draft that has the capability of coming in and starting with maybe the exception of Kenny Pickett. The only reason I say this is because of his extensive time at Pitt and where he worked with Mark Whipple, a former NFL coach. Those two factors make me think that if absolutely necessary, he could make some starts. Still, the overall class does not excite me and it shouldn’t excite you either especially given that next year’s class will be significantly better.

I continue to think the Steelers will ride with Rudolph and give him the opportunity to prove himself as the starter with no one looking over his shoulder. Perhaps add a veteran to have in camp or a couple of free agent rookies. This team is not a quarterback away from a Super Bowl run and we all need to recognize that.

Overthinking every single thing the Steelers do is what we do as fans. This is one thing we shouldn’t however.
