SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Move Along Now” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

I told you last week how big Sunday’s game was for the Cleveland Browns and their fans. It was literally one of the bigger regular season games for them over the last 20 plus years. We know how it turned out but now we are the ones who have to move along. Monday was a day of great enjoyment for us. Celebrating the win yesterday was truly a thing of fun and beauty but in case you hadn’t noticed, another big game awaits. The unbeaten Tennessee Titans will host us on Sunday and I guarantee there was a very straightforward message delivered by Mike Tomlin yesterday. It was a great victory, but a week six victory and they don’t crown champions in October. Time to move on to the Titans. I have no idea what his exact words were but I’m confident they were something like that. Tomlin knows this defense has to re-focus with Robert Spillane now in the middle. He also knows the offense still has things to clean up as well. The moral of the story? Time to get back to the matter at hand.

Speaking of Spillane

Do I think the Steelers will bring in a free agent linebacker? Yes, I do, but everything I’ve been told from Camp through just yesterday is that the Steelers are confident in and have faith in Robert Spillane. I detailed his background and what we can expect last night and unless something totally unexpected happens I think they’ll ride with him.

Tomlin Tuesday

With the players enjoying their day off today, that means that Mike Tomlin will address the media in his weekly press conference coming up at Noon Eastern.

Tweet of the Day… Games in the NFL, no matter the score, always come back to a few specific plays. That said, I don’t quite agree after what I saw Sunday.

Berry Back?

The Steelers hosted two players for tryouts yesterday. One was former punter Jordan Berry which signals that the Steelers are clearly not happy with Dustin Colquitt. Currently, Colquitt is 27th in the NFL in average at 43 yards per punt and he ranks 21st in punts inside the 20 with six. He also ranks 15th in yards per return where returners are gaining an average of 7.1 yards per return. Also in the Steel City was linebacker Ray Wilborn who stands 6’4″ and weighs 224 lbs. He played his college ball at Ball State in Indiana where he collected 166 tackles in two seasons for the Cardinals.

Can Conner Keep It Up?

I don’t need to go into because you already know about James Conner’s history and that makes me wonder if he can sustain this level of play for the long haul. Conner is running with authority and with more burst than we’ve seen in some time. He’ never going to be confused with Willie Parker in the speed department or “The Bus” when it comes to bruising running ability but he’s clearly playing with a chip on his shoulder right now. I really like the balance of Conner, Benny Snell and an occasional appearance by Anthony McFarland. If Conner keeps this up then I like our future this year even more.
