SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Home Again” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

We have been saying for several weeks now that this would be no ordinary NFL Preseason. With no exhibition games, a more generous practice squad and the knowledge that next years salary cap is going to be way down, the amount of movement by players would be significant. The Steelers were part of that frenzy on Sunday when they brought two former Steelers back home again. Quarterback Josh Dobbs and safety Sean Davis returned to Pittsburgh as depth players who are quite familiar with the system. Dobbs was acquired after being claimed by the Steelers on waivers from Jacksonville. Davis was recently released by Washington and comes back as a free agent. This of course required the Steelers to move two players to make room for Dobbs and Davis. QB Devlin Hodges was released and S Curtis Riley signed with the Practice Squad. These two acquisitions are a nice story but they are about depth and nothing else. Dobbs was viewed as a better option than Hodges and Davis was seen as a better option than Riley. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. If you’re thinking that Dobbs was brought back to someday challenge Mason Rudolph as Ben Roethlisberger’s ‘heir apparent’ then you’d be thinking wrong. That’s not what this is about. Good teams have good depth and that’s why these moves were made.

Cam Do!

It gives me great pleasure to tell you that Cam Heyward will retire a Pittsburgh Steeler. The two sides came to an agreement late last night on a four-year extension worth about $65 million. Should he play out the entirety of this deal he’ll likely leave as the second highest paid player in team history behind Ben Roethlisberger. Heyward IS Pittsburgh and in many ways Pittsburgh IS him. He is everything you want on and off the field and we are thrilled this is done.

Tweet of the Day… I’d say Cam is pretty excited.

One Week to Go

One week from tonight the Steelers will be in New York, errrrrr, New Jersey to take on the New York Giants. I’m going to tell you what you already know but it’s going to be a LONG weekend as we wait for our Black and Gold.
