Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.
Talk about a guy who knows his body… T.J. Watt told America he had torn his pectoral muscle and that’s exactly what he did. That’s the bad news. The good news as of now is that he didn’t tear the tendon which means he could possibly return in six to eight weeks. That’s a far different situation than missing the entire season. It’s fair to ask if he’ll be 100% when he returns and I don’t believe he will. It’ll be something he will have to deal with over the course of the season. I’ll still take Watt at 75% over just about anybody else in this league at 100%. In the meantime, Malik Reed steps into familiar territory. The recently acquired former Bronco saw most of his action following an injury to the guy in front of him in Denver and now history is repeating itself. Reed doesn’t have to be Watt – no one is – but he does have to create enough issues to keep Alex Highsmith from being double-teamed. Derrek Tuszka faces the same situation. When he spells either Highsmith or Reed he has to be solid, there’s no other option. How quickly they can get 2017 draft pick Ryan Anderson up to speed will also be important. He signed to the Practice Squad earlier this week. So yes, there’s good news regarding Watt but there are several games ahead where he won’t be available and guys have to make contributions.
Tweet of the Day… Awesome.

You Aren’t a Doctor
And neither am I for that matter but it needs to be said. I cannot believe the amount of people chiming in with their “prognosis” for Watt. There are actually some, like former Steeler Arthur Moats, who can speak to it. He suffered a similar injury and made it clear he still wasn’t the same when he returned. Fans immediately ripped him for doubting Watt!! How dare he??? All he was doing was giving input based on his own experience. We are all different. We all heal at different rates. Let’s allow the professionals and people with experience to do their jobs.
What Makes a Great Catch?
I find it fascinating as to what fans these days consider a “great catch.” I will always contend that one aspect of this that is overlooked are the gloves. Odell Beckham, Jr’s one-handed grab was superb many years ago but come on… Does he make that catch without the glove? And what about sideline catches? Diontae Johnson made a terrific catch on the sidelines Sunday. Was it great? Yes, was it one of his best? I’m not sure. I’ve seen him do that many times. Heck, even Bengals’ tight end Hunter Hurst made an awesome, sideline grab and tapped his two feet in as well. Don’t get me wrong, these all take top notch athletic ability and require thousands of reps, but I think we get out of control sometimes praising catches that are becoming a part of every Sunday.
The Pats
There used to be a time when the Steelers were facing the New England Patriots that many of us just felt whipped before the game was even played. Tom Brady used to rack up numbers on our defense faster than a pinball machine. Now, things are nowhere near that sort of feeling. But… This is still a Bill Belichick coached team that got its’ butt kicked in Miami last week. Do I expect a Steelers’ victory this week? Hell yes but I also expect a much better Patriots’ team than we saw last week.
