When you’re listed as “week to week” with an injury that’s not very good. When you’re a rookie and you receive that designation it’s even worse and that’s the fate that has befallen Roman Wilson. The Steelers’ rookie wideout went down yesterday and was eventually taken away from the fields at St. Vincent College on a cart. This development isn’t good for Wilson and it certainly isn’t good for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With an already questionable lineup at wide receiver, this puts the position in the spotlight even more and puts pressure on General Manager Omar Khan to make an improvement or two. As Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com told me on a special podcast this week, Calvin Austin III isn’t your prototypical number two wide receiver but he’s been really good. And considering the amount of multiple tight end sets perhaps it doesn’t matter as much.
That said, there are going to be moments when you have to use multiple receivers and if defenses roll coverage towards George Pickens all the time because they don’t fear anyone else, that’s not good. The ball is in your court Khan Artist!
Other Notes From Camp
Roster Moves. The Steelers released wide receiver Marquez Callaway and cornerback Josiah Scott this week. With Scott no longer on the roster, that means the Steelers really like what rookie Beanie Bishop, Jr is doing as the slot cornerback. To replace those two the Steelers added cornerback Kyler McMichael and tight end Matt Sokol. The signing of Sokol may indicate that Rodney Williams’ could keep him out awhile.
Up Tempo?? One significant noticeable difference about the Arthur Smith offense so far has been the use of more tempo. You’ll recall the famous “muddle huddle” used by Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger… That seems to have made a return. I am all for this. Keeping the defense from getting guys on and off the field helps and the Steelers have always had some success doing this.
Guard Play. I still struggle to understand it but I’m coming around more and more. The Steelers are clearly not going to extend James Daniels and Mark Kaboly of The Athletic believes it isn’t because of one guy, but two. Mason McCormick, the behemoth out of South Dakota State, has performed well but so too has second year man Spencer Anderson. Mike Tomlin loves versatility in his lineman and Anderson is putting that on display. He’s more of a tackle but has made a nice transition to guard. The Steelers clearly feel they can be just as good and a lot cheaper.
What the Hell is This? Did you see as part of the new rules on the kickoff that you cannot do one until the fourth quarter? And… you have to announce you’re doing it?? Why is Roger Goodell and the NFL so adamant about taking fun out of the game? And for those of you just “dying” for more interviews, the head coaches will now be doing live, in-game interviews. Does anyone actually gain ANYTHING from these? Coaches don’t want to do them and reporters usually don’t like them either because they know they aren’t going to get much. Completely stupid in my opinion.
