No Need to Take Sides; Highsmith and Herbig Can Both Thrive

I’m not sure why so many Steelers’ fans have chosen to ‘take sides’ in the Alex Highmsith – Nick Herbig debate. In fact, there isn’t any debate and there shouldn’t be at all. Highsmith is the starting outside linebacker and Herbig is the number one reserve. I could end this article right there but I won’t simply because there’s more to say on the subject.

It’s been a difficult year for Highsmith. While the Steelers have played 12 games he’s only been available for six of them. His most recent injury has been a sprained ankle suffered in the win over Washington. In those six games, he’s produced three sacks and has at times looked faster and quicker than at any point in his career.

Herbig has also had some injury issues this season playing in eight of the team’s 12 games. For his part, Herbig has recorded 4.5 sacks and has forced four fumbles. Those stats are in large part what is leading fans to suggest that Herbig should be the starter over Highsmith. And that’s where some context and insight is needed.

There may well come a point in time where Nick Herbig is a true starting linebacker in the NFL, but the one area Highsmith has an advantage over him is playing against the run. Do not misunderstand me here. I am NOT saying Herbig isn’t good at setting the edge and forcing running backs back inside. What I am saying is that Highsmith is better and more reliable at it currently. This will matter down the stretch against teams like the Ravens and Eagles.

The return of Highsmith should not be looked at as anything that causes a controversy. He’s the starter and should be treated as such. Instead, his return should be viewed as a tremendous positive for the entire Outside Linebacker group. Both of these guys are now healthy. T.J. Watt and Preston Smith are as well. This means you can have one hell of a great rotation down the stretch and it means your premier pass rushers are fresher in the fourth quarter.

In other words, Highsmith’s return should not be seen as ‘controversial’ at all. It’s a huge plus and should be treated as such.
