Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Thursday!

The Kickoff

The decision to trade Diontae Johnson looks better and better doesn’t it? That doesn’t stop people from forgetting that Omar Khan failed to replace him. And please don’t tell me Mike Williams is the “replacement.” Khan traded Johnson back in March for Donte Jackson – a move that has provided great dividends – yet he never replaced Johnson with a true number two receiver. So as fans pound their chests over Johnson being suspended by Baltimore for his shitty attitude, let’s also not forget that Khan was unable to secure the services of a top-flight number two. This isn’t a knock on the Steelers’ GM because trades aren’t easy. It’s a knock on those who celebrate trading Diontae Johnson but forget a true replacement was never delivered.

That Said…

Credit Arthur Smith and his staff because they’ve been able to carve out a pretty decent offense despite not having that “true #2 wide receiver.” Calvin Austin III has made plays and so has Darnell Washington from the #2 tight end spot. Will this be sustainable for the remainder of the season and beyond? We’re going to find out.

Hard Knocks

For those of us who have been long-time fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers we already knew who Mike Tomlin was. He’s a great leader, motivator, coach and teacher. Those things were all on display during the premier of ‘Hard Knocks.’ All of those qualities and more do not take away the fact that Tomlin has lost five straight postseason games and hasn’t won one since January of 2017. That’s what matters to me and I know I’m not alone.

The Podcast

We are back with a brand new episode of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc. We’ll discuss the win in Cincy, George Pickens, JPJ, “fake fans” and a whole lot more!

The OLBs

For the first time this season, the Steelers will have all four of their top outside linebackers healthy. With Alex Highsmith returning, some have suggested that Nick Herbig should keep starting. I understand the hype but that’s not happening. Highsmith will start – as he should – but Herbig and Preston Smith being healthy will be huge. This means Teryl Austin can rotate these guys and keep them fresh for the fourth quarter.

Random Reads

George Pickens, already a marked man by officials, will now face even more scrutiny this week. You may recall after the loss in Cleveland two weeks ago, that he blamed the weather and called the Browns a bad team. I’m guessing he’ll be poked, prodded, and pushed hard to make him snap and get another dumb penalty on Sunday… Broderick Jones had a really good game on Sunday. It’s OK to admit this people… Aaron Rodgers is a guy I wouldn’t want anything to do with as a teammate… Why are perfume and cologne commercials so bizarre and downright stupid… Northwestern should scrap their new stadium plans and play be the lake instead. What an awesome scene that was this year… The Patriots are getting a new facility. Are you paying attention Mr. Rooney? It’s way past time… Chris Simms is an idiot. He claims the now former Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus was right not to use a timeout at the end of the Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit. Instead he blamed the QB for getting sacked. That’s all fine and good but as a head coach, you have to recognize your rookie QB is wasting time and burn the damn TO.
