Spring has sprung Steelers’ Fans!
Since last week’s flurry of action things have slowed down a bit for the Steelers in terms of free agency. Make no mistake however that well out of sight from the rest of us, the team is working feverishly behind the scenes to add depth and build the draft board.
Don’t be surprised if the Steelers move to add depth at linebacker with both Sean Spence and Terence Garvin having departed through free agency. I think the defensive line and the secondary could also be addressed as well.
One thing that has to happen, perhaps prior to any other free agent signings, is a contract extension for Lawrence Timmons. They’ve already re-structured his deal as far as it can go because they are out of years to do so, therefore an extension is about all they can do unless an all out release happens. They would save $8.75 million in cap savings but would then have over $6 million in dead money. SCB contributor Ben laid this all out last season.
Tweet of the Day… Le’Veon Bell in some really good company.

The other bit of contract-related info we are waiting for is to see what Cortez Allen chooses to do. The Steelers have asked him to take a pay cut but we’ve yet to hear anything. Should he decide not to take the cut, he’ll most likely be a post June 1st cut although GM Kevin Colbert says he could still be part of the plan depending upon his health. I just can’t see it but I’ve been wrong before.
Just to follow up on Timmons… Everything I’m hearing is that he hasn’t exactly been quick to help the team out here but let’s give it some time before we cast judgment.
I thought Kevin Colbert and Art Rooney II said it perfectly about Martavis Bryant. “We support him, but in all honesty, what happens is totally up to him.” I think we all support Bryant but this is 100% about him moving forward. No other way to put it.
One guy to pay close attention to as the draft nears is Lance Zierlein of NFL.com. His father Larry was a coach for the Steelers for many years and that gave Lance the opportunity to get to know the team well. That’s not exactly why he’s someone to pay attention to though because he also really knows his stuff when it comes to evaluating talent.
Have a great Monday Steeler Nation!
