Steel City Blitz Quick Hitters for July 29th, 2014

Rookie Ryan Shazier continues to impress as Training Camp rolls on.

-Today is an off-day for the players but if you’re going to training camp, here is the official steelers.com guide.

-Lots of great information came in yesterday about the famous ‘backs on backers’ drill as the first day of pads got underway. Ken Laird of Trib-Live Radio had some of the best observations. “Intense backs on backers with coaches Tomlin, Porter, Haley, Sellers, Saxon and Jerry O chirping after every hit.”

-“Pretty good debut for Shazier in backs on backers. Super quick juking side to side in his rush.”

-“Joey Porter to LB Howard Jones after a bad rep: “That s#@! ain’t violent at all. You’re creeping up on him.”

-Ramon Foster was not back at practice today as was reported yesterday.

-Mark Kaboly of the Tribune-Review tweeted… McCullers just got pancaked by DeCastro… Jordan Dangerfield was a beast during the live drills… These first two periods in pads are absolutely ridiculous physical. Never saw this before.

My take on that last tweet from Kaboly is that there is clearly a sense of urgency on this team. I think Tomlin and the staff have laid this down since the spring and it’s carrying over into camp. Rookies sound like they’re hungry and vets are getting after it too.

-Speaking of rookies, several people on hand in Latrobe raved about rookie tackle Chris Elkins who more than held his own in several one-on-ones including two with Cam Heyward.

-Can anyone explain the rise in groin injuries during this camp? Mike Mitchell, Alvester Alexander, Martavis Bryant, Jordan Zumwalt… What have these guys been training for all offseason?

-Here’s your video for today. Bradshaw singing. It’s not as bad as you might think.
