Good Friday to you Steelers fans.
By tomorrow at 4pm, a number of young men who have been working their butts off for several months will have received some bad news. A small fraction may find solace by getting a fresh start elsewhere and a few will gain a bit of a reprieve by joining the Practice Squad. But for many, getting the word that you’ve been cut is one of the worst feelings you could ever have. Former Steelers’ Coach Bill Cowher has said many times have how difficult the process is for numerous reasons. You get to know these guys well. You learn who they are, where they’re from and you know how hard they work. And then you part ways in an instant. It’s something that has existed for a long, long time but that doesn’t make it any easier. I don’t envy Mike Tomlin and I know he’s not crazy about it either.

It’s Gonna Be Ugly
We briefly discussed this on the podcast last night but anyone expecting some clean, flawless football in the first few weeks is sorely mistaken. With no preseason games AT ALL, we can expect some ugly action when the teams finally hit the field and several players across the league have told ESPN the same thing. Essentially, we will see “preseason type mistakes” in games that will actually count.
Tempering Our Expectations
There’s no one that wants Big Ben to come out firing on all cylinders more than me. His energy will be high and he’ll be ready to go but I have to be realistic too. Even when Seven gets some snaps in the preseason he can still come out and take some time to get warmed up. Obviously this is a situation where I want to be 100% WRONG. I want him to be as awesome and on fire as you do but let’s give him some time to get going. I think it’s fair and I think people assuming anything else need to relax a bit.
