SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Wino Challenge” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Devin White and Devin Bush are the two names most often associated with the Steelers when it comes to their 20th pick in the NFL Draft. But one name that is getting a ton of attention is Michigan EDGE rusher Chase Winovich. As you might imagine I spend most of my fall watching the Steelers but the only other team I see play a significant amount is Michigan. Therefore I’m pretty familiar with Winovich. I want to be really clear here; I didn’t do our Prospect Profile on Winovich so I didn’t break down the tape as I normally would. That said, I do not see him as a first round possibility for the Steelers. First of all the Steelers love younger players (in the first round especially) and Winovich is already 24 years old. Many folks are also getting hung up on the fact he’s a Western PA kid as if that should determine whether the Steelers draft him or not. As a player, Winovich has a great motor, thoroughly enjoys the game and is fairly disciplined but he disappears too often in games to warrant first round mention. Anyone you take in the first round has to be a guy capable of changing games at any moment and I don’t see him in that vein. His limited amount of moves when it comes to pass rushing is something that can get better but you’d like to see more from a guy that you’re drafting in the first round. I think Winovich can end up being a really good player in the NFL but I just don’t see him as top 20 guy.

The Steelers are now starting to host potential draftees and this comes with a word of warning. Don’t fall in love with a guy because you “hear the Steelers like him and are bringing him for a visit.” The fact of the matter here is that there is gamesmanship involved. Remember when the Steelers once hosted Breshad Perriman? There was very little interest in actually drafting him but because the Ravens needed a wide receiver, why not scout the potential competition a bit? And also, just because you hear Steelers’ scouts are talking to prospects at their Pro Day doesn’t mean they’ll be high on the Steelers’ list either. Look no further than Baylor’s Andrew Billings last year.

Tweet of the Day… Had to share yet another amazing Dave DiCello shot of the Burgh. No words.

Mark Barron is officially a Steeler. He signed his two-year contract yesterday and had some very nice things to say about his desire to play for Mike Tomlin. Everything I’ve seen and heard about Barron is that he’s a great good and a good leader and he doesn’t want to ever come off the field. Sounds good to me!

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
