SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “What We’ve Learned So Far” Edition

Good Monday fine people of the Black and Gold fandom!

There were some good things in the Steelers’ loss like Cam Sutton getting on the field and making a nice play and the same could be said for Ryan Shazier too. But there are significant concerns as well. Whether it’s the subpar play of Alejandro Villanueva and Ross Cockrell or the total absence of Mike Mitchell, there are serious issues.

Le’Veon Bell coming back doesn’t solve everything either. In fact, I’ll be surprised if he plays in the opener if he really does wait until the first to report. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if Mike Tomlin said, “uh-uh” let him sit.

JuJu Smith-Schuster has now had four different injuries during the preseason. Thankfully, none have been too serious. I hope this is not a pattern for JJSS because as high draft pick much is expected.

What we’ve learned in other words is that the Steelers’ secondary is far from settled and if this team has to go with Rob Golden and the aforementioned Cockrell, it’s in trouble. We’ve also learned that Villanueva is probably giving Ben Roethlisberger nightmares and suddenly, there’s a competition for long snapper. Sixth round pick Colin Holba has been less then consistent.

Tweet of the Day… Best wishes to those in Texas and Louisiana. Just incredible numbers coming in.

Knile Davis had some nice runs against the Colts but it worries me how quickly he bounces things outside. The best illustration was on an audible in a short yardage situation. Ben Roethlisberger handed the ball to Davis who scampered left and lost yardage. Big Ben can be seen motioning towards the line of scrimmage as if to say “you were supposed to go here.”

I will not celebrate the torn ACL suffered by New England’s Julian Edelman. Am I glad that’s one less weapon for Tom Brady? Of course, but these guys work too hard for any of us to wish this type of thing on any of them.

Lastly, I think you really need to pay attention to guys being cut across the NFL. From tight ends to safeties to cornerbacks and linebackers… Don’t be surprised if the Steelers bring someone in.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!

I’m afraid that if this version of a defensive backfield is there when Brady shows up he’ll be licking his chops. They need to send Gay and Cockrell kicking stones up the road. Brady will eat them alive and I’m a diehard Stiller fan

Couldn’t agree more Norm. The lack of consistent pressure combined with those two is a recipe for disaster against Brady or just about any other QB.
