SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Weight Issues” Edition

Najee Harris of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

I remember as a kid being taught that there are certain things you never ask a woman. You never ask for her age and you never ask how much she weighs. Apparently the latter notion should start applying to NFL players. There’s not any other time on the calendar that brings out more ridiculous talking points than June and July. Look no further than the issue of Najee Harris’ weight. Despite numerous other examples of the uselessness of this debate, we find ourselves arguing over how much Harris should weigh. Most of you know this but muscle weighs more than fat. It is abundantly clear to this writer that Harris has added significant muscle to his frame. Therefore, his weight will have grown. I do admit there’s an interesting story here. If you look back at Le’Veon Bell and James Conner, both were tasked with getting lighter from their first seasons to their second. Harris has gone in a different direction and I’m fine with it. His build is different than the two mentioned and I have to believe if Mike Tomlin were concerned about it we’d know by now. Harris isn’t the first guy to have to answer questions about his weight. Ben Roethlisberger’s weight debate was as predictable as the Browns losing to him throughout his career. Remember Casey Hampton? His weight was a constant concern every time Training Camp opened. Neither Big Ben nor Hampton were hampered and I don’t think Harris will be either.

Tweet of the Day… So great to see the Steelers back at St. Vincent.

Diontae

Diontae Johnson told reporters yesterday that he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. Naturally, social media jumped to conclusions about whether ‘he really meant it’ or if he was ‘just saying that.’ Honestly, players cannot win and the Derek Jeter approach looks much more enticing. Speak to the media in generalities and say as little as possible that might be construed as a talking point. Let’s remember that JuJu Smith-Schuster wanted to stay in Pittsburgh as did Antonio Brown. Neither did. Johnson knows that Minkah Fitzpatrick is the priority signing right now for Omar Khan and the front office so he knows patience is important. That doesn’t mean however that he won’t be demanding top wide receiver dollars. There’s still plenty of time here so I’m not going to get too caught up with what he says.

Champions!

I try to stick to the Steelers and NFL as much as possible in this space but I have to gloat a bit. My son’s U-18 soccer club won the State Cup this past weekend. It was the first State Cup Title in our club’s 30-year history. He’s a goalkeeper who at 5’9″ is constantly told he isn’t “tall enough.” He and his defenders gave up less than a goal per game en route to the title so he’s doing something right. Very proud dad.
