SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Transitions” Edition

Good Day to you Steelers’ Fans.

The question of whether the Pittsburgh Steelers should place the Transition Tag on Le’Veon Bell is looming larger with each passing day. Starting February 19th, the Steelers can choose to use this tag and must ultimately do so by March 5th. There are significant pros and cons to the Steelers using this tag on Bell and we’ll address those in the coming days. But perhaps the biggest question is why would the Steelers want to go through any of this again? After last season’s mess that saw Bell skip the entire season I struggle to wonder why the team would even bother. What we must do however is look at it from the business point of view like the Steelers are. They seem to feel that perhaps they can gain something from using the tag. We shall see.

I said yesterday that we need to give Antonio Brown a chance to explain himself regarding a domestic violence accusation from last month. We now know that Brown “pushed or shoved” the mother of one of his children down to the ground. She chose not to press charges. The NFL is investigating and regardless of how it may compare to Ray Rice or Kareem Hunt, it isn’t a good look for Brown.

Still plenty of time to get involved with the Ben Roethlisberger Youth Football Camp. People tell me it’s too expensive at times and I get that, not all of us can afford this. For those that can, I strongly urge you to get your son or daughter involved. For those that can’t, Ben does offer scholarship opportunities for kids to attend.

Tweet of the Day… I enjoy seeing other Steelers’ fans as giddy as I am when I get something “Steelers related” in the mail.

I see misunderstanding a lot when it comes to free agency so let me give you just a brief “reader’s digest” version if you will. A UFA (unrestricted free agent) is a player who has total freedom to choose whatever team he wants to sign with should they want his services. A RFA (restricted free agent) is a player who has three years of accrued service. The team holds a bit of control over the player because they have the right to place a ‘tender’ on them meaning any team that signs them could have to give compensation in the form of a draft pick. Lastly is the ERFA (exclusive rights free agent). This player has little freedom at all and less than two accrued years of service. These players are not allowed to negotiate with other teams.

Believe me, each level goes much deeper than this but those are the general ideas.

New Miami Dolphins’ Head Coach and former Patriots’ Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores said something yesterday I wish I’d hear more from the Steelers. Flores was asked about what defensive scheme he will run and his reply was along the lines of “I don’t know if we’ll be a 3-4 or a 4-3.” With teams in specialty packages so often a ‘base’ defense isn’t what it used to be. I think the Steelers recognize this but sometimes I wonder…

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
