SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Something is Amiss” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

It’s not difficult to figure out. When you’re losing, things can spiral out of control quickly especially if you aren’t accustomed to it. The players seem to be saying all of the right things. They know they aren’t playing well and they are taking personal responsibility. Whether Ben Roethlisberger or JuJu Smith-Schuster or Cam Heyward, they are owning this current losing streak and they aren’t passing the responsibility on to anyone else. While that’s good and all, something just seems amiss right now. The offense looks more like last year’s offense than last year’s offense did! You have a clear disconnect between the receivers and the quarterback because every week there are missed signals and missed reads and if you watch closely enough, Big Ben isn’t even bothering to audible out of plays when he knows they aren’t likely to work. Worse yet, it appears he may not even be able to audible much of the time and if that’s at the direction of the coaching staff it’s an offense worth being fired over in my book. If you showed someone every Matt Canada offense from his collegiate days and then the one he’s allegedly running now there would be nothing similar. Not one thing would look familiar. Then you have former players chiming in. From Santonio Holmes to Vince Williams to Nate Washington, they are definitely seeing something that many of us aren’t.

Help on the DL

The Steelers signed nose tackle Eli Ankou to the practice squad. The Canadian played his college ball at UCLA. He is a true nose tackle and is likely a two-down player and nothing more but the Steelers need help stopping the run right now and his signing makes sense.

Tweet of the Day… Not gonna lie here. I’m with Gruden. How in the hell do you have a lightning delay inside a dome?

Tomlin Tuesday

A Mike Tomlin press conference is rarely entertaining and is seldom informative. I don’t expect anything to change today. What I know you’ll hear is that “we aren’t hitting the panic button” type of stuff along with some trusted and perhaps new cliches. Outside of that? Good luck.

Let Me Explain…

I’m a firm believer in the “24 hour rule” which states it’s important to not overreact to an outcome and then address it a day later. That said, I’m sticking by what I said on Sunday night in that it’s time to sit Ben Roethlisberger. Let me explain why. While the season is young, I also see what is happening in the rest of the division and in the conference. The chances of the Steelers making the postseason are still there but we have to be honest with ourselves. This team has incredible youth in spots that are just too important and they are costing this team. Last we saw Mason Rudolph, he nearly beat the “had to win Browns” in Cleveland by throwing for 315 yards. Do I believe the Steelers have a better chance of winning games with Big Ben? I do, but I don’t see him suddenly finding the fountain of youth and I don’t see this offense all of the sudden become what we hoped it would be. Am I being a pessimist? No, I’m being a realist. I just don’t see the reason to make Seven endure this any longer.
