SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Short Turnaround’ Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

While the Steelers were able to enjoy a victory this past Monday night, the turnaround to next week is that much shorter. Plus, the Steelers also have to hit the road again for a 1pmET tilt in Atlanta. Could it be worse? Of course it could. The NFL could have had them playing out West either Monday night or this coming Sunday. So all in all, it isn’t too bad. Many years ago there was a commonly held belief that “Monday Night’s winners were Sunday’s losers.” As time has gone by however that trend isn’t as accurate. More and more these teams are actually finding success in their next game despite shorter rest and less preparation time. None of this of course really matters for the Steelers. They still need to go into Atlanta and play well because the Falcons may be under .500 but they are right in the thick of the race in the underachieving NFC South. This won’t be easy but that’s fitting for this season isn’t it?

Tweet of the Day… It’s not going to involve the Steelers so I don’t care.

The Running Backs

I’m not going to say the Steelers will be “fine” if Najee Harris can’t go and Jaylen Warren is still out but I do think Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland can get some things done. To be honest, they’ll have to because there’s no way Mike Tomlin wants to put this game on the shoulders of Kenny Pickett. We know from this season that when Pickett throws thirty times or less then the team’s chances of winning go up. Snell and Ant Mac don’t have to be awesome, they just have to be serviceable.

Steelers History

This week Gordon explores a 1968 matchup between the one-win Steelers and the one-win Atlanta Falcons.

And So It Begins…

I remember when NFL Draft coverage was pretty much from the end of the Super Bowl through the Draft. Now? It’s 365 days a year. Dane Brugler, who does a great job at The Athletic has the Steelers (currently picking 12th) taking Georgia CB Kelee Ringo. Do the Steelers need a top-flight corner? No question, but history suggests -Not just in Pittsburgh but lead-wide- is that teams are way better off getting corners on the free agent market. Very few top CB picks actually pan out. Not saying that Ringo wouldn’t be great, but it’s something to consider.

Speaking of Corners

I’m starting to wonder if Ahkello Witherspoon ever sees the field again as a Steeler. The only significant minutes played this year have been pretty bad overall and James Pierre, while not perfect, has been better. Factor in the arrival of William Jackson III (who will hopefully play at some point) and Witherspoon may be the odd man out. Long term, the Steelers have decisions to make especially in regards to Cam Sutton. Mike Tomlin loves him but how much will he take to return?
