SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Schedule Shakedown’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

By now you’ve likely seen the 2023 schedule for our beloved Black and Gold. The first thing that jumped out at me was the bookends. For the first time since 2014 the Steelers will open a season at home when the 49ers come in for a 1pmET start. They will actually be at home in week two as the Browns bud on down the turnpike for a Monday night affair. This will mark the first time in over 20 years that the Steelers open a season with two-straight home games. But then there’s the other end of the schedule. Pittsburgh will close the season with road games at Seattle on New Year’s Eve and then at Baltimore to conclude the year. Those two games will difficult regardless of injuries or playoff positioning. In the middle (weeks 9,10,11) the Steelers are at home. They will also have four primetime games in 2023. There is one Monday night game, one Sunday night game and two home Thursday night contests. While I personally hate Thursday night games with every fiber of my being, both of these come after the week six BYE week. The players aren’t fans of the quick turnaround from Sunday to Thursday but they do enjoy the “mini-bye week” that follows. Considering how early the BYE week is that isn’t a bad piece of compensation. One other piece of decent news is that the Steelers will get their trip to Las Vegas out of their way early in week three and their trip to LA comes off the BYE week so that’s not too bad.

The Podcast

We recorded episode 318 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida last evening. We gave our thoughts on the 2023 schedule and discussed the decision to release Arthur Maulet earlier in the week. Casey Kasem stops by and we recalled some past seasons as well. Check it out!

Tweet of the Day… Public Relations teams for all 32 teams have been treating the schedule release day as an opportunity to really show some creativity and humor. After seeing what PR teams in Tennessee and with the LA Chargers, I’m not all that impressed with the Steelers.

Tweet of the Day #2… This leads into my next thought below.

Just Stop It Already

I will never understand how someone can ‘predict’ wins and losses when the schedule comes out. Predicting games the week they are played is difficult enough – ask anyone who gambles – yet for some reason people continue to do it. It’s May, as the tweet says, meaning there’s absolutely no reason to predict a damn thing. We don’t know what the rosters will look like. We don’t know who will be injured for our team our the opponent and we don’t know anything about what trends are currently taking hold. Once we get through rookie camp and mini-camp and Training Camp then maybe we can start staring into our crystal balls. Until then? No one wins Lombardi Trophies in May.
