SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Rookie Wrap-Up’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Rookie Camp for 2023 is in the books. Most of the young men who participated in the event will be soon looking for jobs elsewhere while a select few may be given a still ‘long-shot’ possibility of being around Training Camp late this summer. The rookies most fans care about right now are those that were drafted at the end of April and is usually the case, the early returns are glowing. Broderick Jones is a perennial all-pro waiting to happen… Joey Porter, Jr will be a lockdown corner for a decade… Darnell Washington will do this and Keeanu Benton will do that… You get the picture. The bottom line here is that these guys all looked the part of why they were drafted by the Steelers and that’s really all you can ask. This is literally just a couple of days of agility work, playbook familiarity and so on. This is no time to make prognostications about the future for each player. It’s time to simply get to see them in black and gold for the first time and not much more than that. When the veterans come in soon that’s when we can start to get a better idea of where and how these rookies will fit.

Tweet of the Day… I’m pretty sure all of my high school sports career is on these tapes.

Green to Fullback

I have a very firm belief that you never say “never.” But I feel very confident in saying that I don’t see Kendrick Green becoming a fullback for the Steelers. In case you missed this, former Steeler Vince Williams suggested it via Twitter and of course, fans ran wild with this. Green, due to the many upgrades along the offensive line, is very likely going to be cut at some point. With Derek Watt still unsigned and only one other potential fullback currently on the 90-man roster, the idea of Green moving there has come forward. He’s an aggressive, play to the whistle type of blocker for sure but you need your FB to do a lot more than block. They have to be able to carry the ball, catch the ball and play special teams. I don’t see Green being able to make that transition.

Keeping My Eye On…

I really didn’t think I would be as intrigued by the Steelers’ wide receiver room this coming season as I now find myself. While the Steelers did not draft a receiver for like the first time in a million years, they did move for Allen Robinson and sign Hakeem Butler. Butler had a really nice season in the XFL this spring and has very imposing size at 6’5″. I think we know what we have in Diontae Johnson and George Pickens but after that? I think it’s going to be highly interesting as to how things shake out. Calvin Austin III remains a HUGE question mark and what is their plan with Gunner Olaszewski?
