SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Schedule Release” Edition

On the surface, the Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 schedule isn’t that bad. They finish the season with three out of their last five games at home. They have a stretch from week eight through week 11 where they don’t leave the state of Pennsylvania. That includes a trip to Philly, a BYE week and two straight home games. There are also no games outside of the Eastern Time Zone which has often been a thorn in the side of Mike Tomlin. As I say every year at this time however, this is all just “on paper.” There will be injuries. There will be surprise stars. There will be players who don’t live up to their billing. In other words, things will change drastically between now and when these games are played.

Gone is Carolina

For the first time since 2003, the Steelers will not play the Carolina Panthers during the preseason. With the league reducing the number of exhibition games from four to three, this was bound to happen. Instead, the Steelers will host the Seahawks and Lions while they visit the Jaguars.

Tweet of the Day… See Below

Rookie Mini-Camp

Today begins the three-day Rookie Mini-Camp on the South Side. This is where all drafted rookies, undrafted free agent rookies, some first year players and a smattering of others with long odds of making it will gather to show the Steelers what they can do. My biggest words of caution here surround the term ‘hyperbole.’ You are going to hear how well Kenny Pickett is throwing and how athletic George Pickens is and how fast Calvin Austin III is but please remember this isn’t exactly “game-like” situations here. Everyone can look good. Once we get to Training Camp, we can start to imagine what some of these guys can do on Sundays.

Congrats to the Bus

Jerome Bettis, the Steelers’ Hall of Fame running back, didn’t need to go back to school. He could have easily remained the guy he is with a number of different businesses and sponsorships. But he did what he had promised to do and he returned to Notre Dame to get his business degree. Bettis didn’t do this online or “virtually.” He re-immersed himself into the campus culture and attended school in-person. He did all of the things every other student was required to do and this should not go without some words here. Well done Bus!

A Few More Schedule Nuggets

The NFL got this completely right by bringing the Raiders into Pittsburgh on Christmas Eve 50 years and a day since the Immaculate Reception… I wonder how many cameras will be on Brian Flores when he walks out of the locker and into Hard Rock Stadium in Miami… Eight straight years of opening on the road. I don’t even think about it anymore… If all things remain as they are, the Steelers will face Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Matt Ryan, and Joe Burrow (twice). Those are tough matchups but they’ll also face ‘who the hell knows’ in Carolina, Cleveland, New Orleans and Atlanta.
