SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Proving Himself” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Imagine being a young man who was talented enough to play college football but that talent didn’t get you drafted. Instead, you get offered a “tryout” with the New York Jets. That didn’t go well so you head to Pittsburgh… and you get yourself a contract. That’s what happened with Trevon Mason this past weekend. The former Arizona Wildcat defensive lineman has signed a deal with the Steelers after proving himself during this weekend’s rookie camp. To be blunt, this doesn’t mean anything. Mason could be let go a week from now because a different player becomes available. That does not however take away from what Mason earned. His dream of playing NFL football is still alive and that’s far more than many guys like him can say.

Pickett in Charge

As I said in this space last week, the one thing you cannot do is take too much from what you hear about Rookie Mini-Camp. Fast guys are fast, big guys are big and so on… One of the more overwhelming things we can take from the three day workout is that Kenny Pickett is exactly what you expect in a quarterback. This wasn’t about whether he threw the ball well or used his legs well, this was in regards to his overall command of things and according to multiple sources it was impressive. Both Connor Heyward and Calvin Austin III commented on how well Pickett commanded the huddle. But he also recognized when things weren’t right with play calls and formations. That’s a classic move by coaches in which they give the wrong info in order to see if the QB catches on and Pickett was on top of things. This was a solid first step but when the veterans show up, will he do the same?

Tweet of the Day… Think he’s excited?

Tough Times in Pittsburgh

The Steelers exited the postseason in the first round and now for the fourth straight season the Penguins have been bounced in the first round as well. We Steelers’ fans know what losing legends is like and now the Pens may have seen the end of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Those three brought three Stanley Cups to the Steel City in 15 years together. Crosby is still under contract but the other two are free agents. Father Time comes for all of us…

The GM

While I’m not surprised Art Rooney II is doing his “due diligence” on the hiring of a new general manager, I am a little surprised it has taken this long. He finished up second round interviews with three guys (outsiders) last week and while ARII would tell us there’s no rush, I think before too long there will be. The new GM needs to be in place well before Training Camp because many decisions will have to be made regarding personnel. Who needs to go? Who should they bring in? The Steelers need to get this taken care of soon.
