SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Rooney Rule Redo” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ fans.

Quite frankly, there should not be a Rooney Rule. There should not be a need for a league-wide policy that demands teams interview at least one minority candidate when a head coach job is vacant. This is a professional sport dominated by black players yet we continue to see white men dominate the coaching and front office ranks. This is not my opinion, these are facts. Recently, there was a proposal made to reward teams with draft picks for hiring black coaches. I am not a fan of this and it has been tabled for now by the NFL owners, but at the very least the issue is being addressed. Yesterday, the Rooney Rule (named after the late Dan Rooney), was expanded. Teams must interview a minimum of two minority candidates for head coach and must also interview at least one for coordinator positions. One thing I can’t argue with is that cronyism does exist in the NFL. The number of white coaches who constantly get opportunities despite average or below average results is staggering. Kansas City Chiefs’ Offensive Coordinator Eric Bienemy is a classic case of a guy being screwed by this cronyism. To be fair, I don’t know him. He could be a terrible interview and that’s why he isn’t a head coach. From everything I’m told however that isn’t the case. Yet a guy like Adam Gase gets a second chance? Bienemy is a Super Bowl winner yet the Browns hire a coordinator who hasn’t sniffed a Super Bowl? No matter what your feelings are on the situation if you don’t see the issues involved then I don’t know what to tell you. The need for the Rooney Rule is sad yet here we are.

Tweet of the Day… Boy do I feel this.

Beardgate

There’s nothing like a pandemic to create absolutely ridiculous storylines. As you all know, Ben Roethlisberger had his hair and beard trimmed and may have violated Pennsylvania guidelines by having this done in a barbershop. Look, should Big Ben have done this in the barbershop which was supposed to be closed? No, he shouldn’t have but my goodness. Don’t we have more important things to be worried about?

Trolling…

Yesterday was a big day for national talking heads to get Steeler Nation fired up. Most of us, myself included, took the bait. I don’t get irritated by what they say, I get irritated by the fact that they even say what they do. They know they aren’t actually putting out factual information, they are putting out ‘hot takes’ with no other goal than to get clicks and listens from the fan base. This is just what sports talk has become now. It’s no better than political talk.
