Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.
Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin made it official this morning when he announced that Dwayne Haskins will start the preseason finale in Carolina. This is the right move for sure and it gives him one final opportunity to show what he can do. The question is, does it matter? As far as I’m concerned he’s made the roster. Josh Dobbs will get a lot of time against the Panthers in an effort to perhaps showcase him to a quarterback-desperate team. Also keep an eye on two groups of specialists this weekend. Tomlin claims the punting job is still a hot competition between Jordan Berry and Pressley Harvin III and the long snapping job also seems to be coming down to the final week. Incumbent Cam Kanaday is being pushed by Duquesne graduate Christian Kuntz. Both of these are crucial positions – don’t laugh – if the punter shanks one or the long snapper fires one over someone’s head that’s what we’ll remember. We don’t remember when they do their jobs correctly so yeah, these are important positions up for grabs. But there are many defensive spots guys are trying to hold on to as well. If the Steelers go with just four OLB’s the who are the two guys on the outside looking in? Cassius Marsh, Quincy Roche and Jamir Jones will vie for that. Defensive back depth is very much in flux as well and we could see some serious movement at defensive line in terms of depth. For many of these guys it really is “one more shot.”
