SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “One Month Away” Edition

by Steeldad
Big Ben

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Exactly one month from today, the new National Football League year officially begins. Between now and then, the Pittsburgh Steelers must deal with Ben Roethlisberger and his $41.5 million cap hit. There’s no way in the wide world of sports that they will pay him his $15 million roster bonus that follows just days after the league year begins. Both sides have met, discussed and have likely shared proposals by now. I wish I could tell you what is going to happen but I’m not quite there yet. There are quite a few things pointing towards the Steelers and Big Ben moving on. Two of his closest friends, Maurkice Pouncey and Vance McDonald have retired. There’s no telling what the rest of the offensive line will look like and despite his wishes, JuJu Smith-Schuster is more than likely leaving. I’m told there are some inside the Steelers’ organization that are ready to move on from Ben Roethlisberger. With Mason Rudolph entering the final year of his contract, they want to give him a chance to see what he can do with a full offseason to prepare. At some point, Roethlisberger will no longer be behind center and we are one month from finding out when that might be.

Tweet of the Day… The great Dave DiCello strikes again.

Not Everything You Hear is Gospel

Zach Banner is one of the more likable Steelers on the current roster. Fans appreciate his hard work and effort to make himself into a better player and they also appreciate his concern for others. Obviously we were all saddened for him when he went down in week one with an ACL tear. As he works his way back from that we have to remember that not everything he or anyone else with “information” says is 100% truth. Banner revealed this earlier in the week… “Coach T looked at me and said, ‘You are my answer for 2021, so I need you to focus on your knee, don’t worry about anything else.’ That was the best thing that I could’ve heard,” Banner said, via Mark Kaboly of TheAthletic.com. With Alejandro Villanueva more than likely gone, Banner or Chuks Okorafor will fill that void at left tackle. Let me be perfectly clear about something though. What Tomlin said now matters little in August. If Banner isn’t getting the job done or someone else is getting it done better than he is then Banner will not be the “answer.” This isn’t a knock on Banner or Tomlin. This is the truth. This isn’t high school or college ball where you’re guaranteed a spot because of your reputation. I’m rooting for Banner as hard as anyone but let’s not fool ourselves into forgetting this is a business.
