SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “One Day Expert” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers’ Fans!

We are now getting to that point in the NFL Preseason where the national media guys are starting to come out with their predictions. This is of course part of what they are paid to do but what always makes me laugh is their ‘analysis.’ Many of the top guys will venture out on the road and hit many training camps. Few if any will actually hit all 32 camps but that doesn’t stop them from claiming to know everything there is. Case in point is a guy from Bleacher Report who made it to Steelers’ training camp for one day. He did not mention anything about the poor situation at inside linebacker or the backup QBs and how that shakes out. He did mention that James Conner looked good and so too did Stevan Ridley. Here’s the problem with these ‘one day experts.’ They don’t see nearly enough to form an educated opinion and they miss very important things like Conner’s struggles in pass protection. I get it, it’s hard to get full and extended analysis of every team but if you’re truly going to evaluate players and teams then you need to do a better job.

I really don’t know what to tell you about T.J Watt right now. Today will likely be his tenth straight missed practice. If this continues another week or so I don’t see any way that he’s 100% when the regular season rolls around.

Hard to believe but today and tomorrow are the final two public practices for the fans in Latrobe. Another Training Camp come and gone.

Tweet of the Day… So much truth to this tweet from DWill.

The ‘dollar’ defense is being talked about a lot with the Steelers and rightfully so. If you aren’t familiar, this is where seven defensive backs are on the field typically with two defensive linemen and two outside backers/pass rusher. I have no doubt you’ll see the Steelers use this more in 2018 but I’m not convinced it’s going to be used as often as some have led us to believe. In my mind, the ‘dime’ is more likely to be deployed more often but let’s remember this too; if the Steelers can’t do a better job of stopping the run it won’t matter.

The Steelers signed mountainous offensive tackle Zach Banner yesterday. He’s 6’8″ and 360 lbs. He was a fourth round pick in 2017 but has seen time with the Colts, Browns and Panthers. I have to believe the Steelers are hoping that Mike Munchak can work his magic with this guy. Tyler Meadows was waived/injured to make room for him.

Conner sat out yesterday with a groin injury. It’s not thought to be serious at this time.

In breaking news… The Steelers have waived/injured center Parker Collins and have signed center Ona Omoile.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
