SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “NFL Plus” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

The National Football League would like more of your money. How much of your money they want isn’t yet known but rest assured, they want it. At the NFL Owners meetings yesterday “NFL+” was introduced. This is the league’s idea of having its own digital streaming service. According to The Athletic, a monthly fee was suggested to be five dollars a month but that was only a suggestion. There are a lot of loose ends to this which make me scratch my head a bit. The NFL has deals with Amazon and Apple TV plus it has to decide where the Sunday Ticket is going after next season. That could be the engine driving NFL+ quite honestly. If it flies, the service would have team related content among many other things. I’ll reserve judgment for now but this isn’t all that surprising to me.

Diversity Hiring

Am I missing something here? Brian Flores, now an assistant with the Steelers, filed a massive lawsuit on February 1st alleging racism against three teams and the NFL. The League claims the lawsuit has no merit. Ok fine. But then yesterday the very same NFL announced that ALL teams must have a minority offensive assistant and a woman assistant as well. So on one hand you’re claiming Flores’ lawsuit is frivolous while on the other hand you’re specifically addressing many of the same issues Flores’ suit brings? This is the NFL in a nutshell if you asked me.

Tweet of the Day… Alicia gets it.

On That Subject

I’m thinking more now than ever that the Steelers are NOT going to target a QB early in this draft. That doesn’t mean they won’t take one in the middle or late rounds, but there just isn’t a QB in this draft that screams anything other than “could be.” The Steelers at 20 find themselves in perfect position to literally take the “best player available.” What positions are the Steelers 100% set at right now? Free Safety with Minkah Fitzpatrick and T.J. Watt might be the only ones that are truly entrenched. That leaves a lot of potential avenues for the Steelers to go at 20 and I really hope a true BPA is the one they follow.

Overtime

There are some unique proposals for how to “fix” overtime in the NFL but at the end of the day I think we are all over-thinking this. First of all, get rid of overtime in the regular season. I agree with Mike Tomlin that if you can’t settle it in 60 minutes then too bad. It’s a tie and on to next week. The postseason however is a different story. Obviously we need a winner so let’s keep it simple. Each team gets at least one offensive possession. If the game is still tied afterwards, then it’s sudden death. This concept of “you have to go for two” or “you play a full 15 minute period” is over the top. As football coaches around the country say, “Keep It Simple Stupid.”
