SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Mounting Problems’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Did you see the practice report provided by the Pittsburgh Steelers from yesterday? I had to put it down for a minute because it was taking me so long to read it. If Mike Tomlin had to write it all down then he probably has writer’s cramp today in the worst way. The list of injuries is mounting just like the problems in Pittsburgh are. A win over Tom Brady in what is sure to be his final trip to Pittsburgh, would settle things down if only temporarily.

If you’re keeping score at home then you’ll notice that the entire starting secondary is on this list. Did I mention that tom Brady was coming in to town? Pat Freiermuth being a ‘limited participant’ is a positive sign for him but considering his concussion history it may not matter.

Change for the Sake of Change

I find it difficult to understand how Mike Tomlin can say he’s “open to change” and then just days later suggest he isn’t making changes “for the sake of making changes.” What we must understand first and foremost is that even if Tomlin makes changes – such as giving the defensive play-call duties to Brian Flores for example -he isn’t going to tell us that. If Mike Sullivan calls plays for the offense instead of Matt Canada we aren’t going to know until it gets leaked. The bottom line here? No one is getting fired. That isn’t how the Steelers do things and even with Omar Khan running things I don’t see it changing. You’ll note I’m not suggesting I agree with Tomlin, I’m just telling you how it will likely work.

The Podcast

We return tonight with another great episode of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc. We will analyze this team from top to bottom, discuss the re-emergence of Diontae Johnson’s drops, Najee Harris’ unproductive play, the defensive woes and much, much more.

Warren

Rookie running back Jaylen Warren was asked yesterday about his running style and said he’s tried to do what Najee Harris does but he just can’t. Believe me kid, he shouldn’t be doing it either. What he’s referencing is Harris’ ‘patient’ running style vs his “shot out of a cannon” style. One of the biggest mistakes a young player can make is trying to emulate what someone else does. Keep doing what you’re doing young man although ball security could be improved upon…
