SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Morning After” Divisional Game Edition

by Steeldad

Good day Steelers’ Fans! Hopefully you fall into one of the following categories. You’re still breathing, you’re still sleeping or you’re still on the floor and in need of emergency help.

I can’t recall a playoff game that the Steelers won yet I feel like we lost. In the postseason it’s all about winning and advancing but man… that was ugly.

Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce blamed the officials and went after James Harrison after the game. Perhaps he’s mad at himself for dropping several passes. Either way, he sounds like a sore loser.

Le’Veon Bell broke his week-old record for rush yards in a game with 171 yards on 30 carries. As much as I dislike Cris Collinsworth, the “Frogger” reference was pretty good.

This ‘Antonio Brown Postgame video‘ will get tons of attention this week. As an old school guy, I don’t like he’s doing this when Mike Tomlin is speaking but I also recognize this is a new generation. It’s a non-story as long as the Steelers move on from it.

I wish I knew why the Steelers don’t use play-action pass more. You’ve got a running back gashing the defense and yet we NEVER make a hard fake to suck in those linebackers and safeties. For the life of me I just don’t get it. Ben Roethlisberger is very good at play-action too.

The fact that the Steelers completely forgot about Le’Veon Bell in the Red Zone is mind-boggling to me. It’s unfortunately another reason to question Todd Haley who continues to try and prove he’s smarter than everyone else rather than just stick with what works.

Last night’s game reminded me a bit of Super Bowl XL. I hear lots of complaining about officiating yet I haven’t heard Chiefs’ players take accountability for dropped passes and stupid penalties.

Tweet of the Day… Congrats and wise words from a former Steeler

While I wouldn’t have dared the beast that is Tyreek Hill as often as Danny Smith did, it worked out OK. It’s also worth noting the Steelers used more starters than usual on coverage units last night.

Can’t say enough about Chris Boswell. Goes six for six and then was as humble as any kid I’ve seen in a long time afterwards. Glad he’s a Steeler.

Sean Davis’ hit was a penalty. As the rules of the NFL are today, his helmet came into contact with the helmet of the receiver. I do not believe Davis led with his helmet however. I saw him clearly lead with his shoulder. If you want to blame anyone, blame the coaches at the youth and high school levels who continue to allow hits like this versus attempting to wrap up. Also, Davis had only one other option. Let him catch it and that wasn’t going to happen.

Jesse James: Way to step up young man. Made some big time catches when the offense needed him most.

My game ball goes to the offensive line. They surrendered one sack and led the way for another huge performance for Bell.

I think the secret is out on Alex Smith. He just can’t throw the ball downfield well.

Eric from Steel City Underground made a very apt observation about Tyreek Hill. He said he thought Hill was what the Steelers hoped Dri Archer would be. Couldn’t agree more.

James Harrison? I’ve run out of things to say. He’s been just amazing.

Same for Bud Dupree. Although the Steelers couldn’t capitalize on the turnover he forced, what a great play.

So long Dallas.

On to New England. Have a great day Steeler Nation!

“I think the secret is out on Alex Smith. He just can’t throw the ball downfield well.”
Exactly! So why were the Steelers giving him the underneath routes all day. Playing way too soft on their receivers.

Well Alex, it’s what the Steelers do and have done for a long time. They’d rather you caught the ball in front of them and were tackled for little gain rather than give up a big play deep. When the Steelers were able to get the Chiefs in long yardage situations, Smith struggled. Granted, he had a couple of balls dropped too, but overall he isn’t as good down the field as many other top QBs.

3 Years ago i said James Harrison and Joey Porter were the best outside LB’s on the team even though Porter was coaching at the time. I was laughed at, well HA!!. The game at New England will be great I think it’s about time Ben gets one on Brady. i will say one thing the officials were horrible in both games. There was just a ton of defensive holding by both home teams yesterday and it went uncalled , for the most part.
