SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “GM Dance” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, not counting in-house candidates Omar Khan and Brandon Hunt, have now interviewed ten candidates to replace retiring General Manager Kevin Colbert. I no longer believe that it’s a “formality” that Khan or Hunt or both will get the job. Colbert himself came from Detroit after all in 2000 so the idea of someone coming from outside the organization shouldn’t be that ridiculous. Most recently, the Steelers interviewed three more men for the position. Baltimore Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz, Philadelphia VP of Player Personnel Andy Weidl and Ron Carthon, Director of Player Personnel for the 49ers. The majority of the guys interviewed tend to be more towards the “player evaluation” side of things which makes me wonder. Is Khan safe as the ‘financial’ guy and the Steelers are focused purely on the player side? Are they looking for someone to handle both duties? My gut continues to tell me that with Colbert sticking around in some form, the Steelers are still going to split the general manager position between two people. But the longer this goes the less confidence I have. I would think, especially with the Combine starting today, that Art Rooney II would have preferred to have someone in place. The longer this goes the less the new person or persons, has to learn from Colbert in terms of prepping for a draft.

The TV Shake-Up

This past season we saw the evolution of pro football television broadcasting when “The Manning Cast” became the best thing to happen since John Madden. In an effort to find the right people for the right job, networks are scrambling to grab talent from each other. The first domino appears to have fallen with Troy Aikman set to leave FOX for ESPN where he would jump into the Monday Night Football booth. Who joins him as the play-by-play announcer is uncertain. Al Michaels is thought to be headed to Amazon but could ESPN pull the legendary broadcaster to join Aikman? Rams’ Coach Sean McVay announced this week that he was sticking with the Rams for now while Tom Brady is expected to receive calls although I think he has aspirations in other areas. Do any of us tune in for broadcasters anyway? No, but we will absolutely tune “out” especially for the Cris Collinsworth’s of the world.

Combine Time

Players will start arriving in Indianapolis today as the NFL Combine starts this week. NFL Network will have plenty of on-field coverage starting on Thursday. I urge all of you to take everything you see and hear with a grain of salt. Every time a quarterback is on there is a decent likelihood the Steelers will be mentioned. This is what happens when your QB position is uncertain for the first time in 19 seasons. Pay closer attention to who the Steelers meet with because that gives you more insight into how they might be thinking. And remember, they often talk to players who are teammates of guys they are interested in. Remember when everyone was convinced they were after Chase Winovich and ended up taking Devin Bush?
