Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

The NFL Combine kicks off today in Indianapolis, Indiana. General Managers and Head Coaches and Jerry Jones (probably) will speak to the media. The actual on-field stuff will get underway on Thursday. Below is a schedule of on-field activity courtesy nfl.com. You can actually attend the Combine for free if you are so inclined. Here’s the link for tickets if you’re in the Indianapolis area this week.

Thursday 3.3 – TE, QB, WO

Running starts at 4:00 pm and last player off field around 11:00 pm

Friday 3.4 – OL, RB

Running starts at 4:00 pm and last player off field around 11:00 pm

Saturday 3.5 – DL, LB

Running starts at 4:00 pm and last player off field around 11:00 pm

Sunday 3.6 – PK, DB

PK workout 10:30 am – 1:30 pm

DB running starts at 2:00 pm and last player off field around 7:30 pm

The Combine in my opinion is also the “official” start of the smokescreen season. This is where team officials want us to believe anything but the actual truth so be careful what you buy into and what you dismiss. This is especially true for the Steelers this season who are in the market for a quarterback.

Tweet of the Day… Good, simple advice from our Steelers Historian Gordon on the Steelers playing overseas.

On the Topic of Playing Overseas….

It was announced last week that the Steelers would not be playing in any of the overseas games this coming season. Good news for fans in the US and bad news for fans abroad. Personally, I’ve long been against the Steelers playing in these games for two reasons. First, when you surrender a home game, you are taking a serious amount of business away from thousands of people in Pittsburgh. People like hotel workers, food service folks, vendors, you name it. Secondly, when you send a Steelers’ road game overseas it eliminates the chance for Steelers’ fans where the game was supposed to be played to see the Black and Gold. I am however coming around to this with the addition of the 17th game. And furthermore, I’m disgusted by the lack of empty seats at Heinz Field. If season ticket holders aren’t going to sell those seats or use them then they don’t deserve them. I guarantee people in London, Mexico City or Munich would love the opportunity. Overall however, I still don’t like us playing overseas.

Free Agent QBs

I will stick to my belief that the Steelers will not attempt to find Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement this year. Therefore they will find a bridge QB. Of all the available signal-callers, I’ve concluded that Mitch Trubisky is the best option. He will come relatively cheap, has solid starting experience and would fit Matt Canada’s system fairly well as he has some mobility. I also like Marcus Mariota but I give the nod to Trubisky. Jameis Winston is too turnover prone and is coming off an ACL tear. I need a guy who can come in and practice right away. Teddy Bridgewater is what he is but I don’t think he’ll win you too many games on his own. The bottom line for me is Mason Rudolph needs competition and I’m not sure getting it from Dwayne Haskins is enough.
