SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Draft What-Ifs” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

Every NFL Draft offers up its’ share of surprises. Whether it’s David DeCastro falling all the way to us or Aaron Rodgers falling to the Green Bay Packers, there is no shortage of things that make you scratch your head. Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers sitting at 24, the possibility exists that a player no one currently sees being available there actually is. So let’s take a look at some of these “what-ifs.” Let’s start with one of those quarterbacks. It’s fair to say that Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson will be gone, but what if Trey Lance, Justin Fields or Mac Jones is available at 24? Lance and Fields would be no-brainers in my opinion. Jones’ lack of athleticism is what makes me concerned about taking him in the first. What if a cornerback like Caleb Farley or Patrick Surtain II are still available? The Steelers need help here and I think either would be a viable option even with Farley’s injury history. Linebackers? If one of the top EDGE guys are there, do the Steelers pull the trigger? They have always believed that you can never have enough pass rushers… Lastly, can you imagine if one of these top wideouts falls to 24? Could the Steelers say “no” to that? I think most of Steelers Nation knows that an offensive lineman or running back is highest on the “need” list but what we see and what the Steelers see are often two different things. Therefore, anything is possible in the NFL Draft.

Tomlin Tuesday!

Normally “Tomlin Tuesday” means it’s time for his weekly press conference but in this case it’s to announce the Steelers and Tomlin have agreed to a three-year extension. More on this on the podcast Thursday night.

Tweet of the Day… Wow! I always wondered what happened to Charlie!

Simulations

OK so I ran through another series of ten first round simulations but this time I used the simulator at Pro Football Network and the one at The Draft Network. Here’s the ten Steelers’ selections from the PFN… 1. Creed Humprhey, C, OU… 2. Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama… 3. Barmore… 4. Mac Jones, QB, Alabama… 5. Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas… 6. Traded out of the first… 7. Jamin Davis, LB, Kentucky… 8. Cosmi… 9. Teven Jenkins, OT, OKST… 10. Humphrey

And here’s the list from TDN… 1. Caleb Farley, CB, VT… Najee Harris, RB, Alabama… 3. Farley… 4. Harris… 5. Harris… 6. Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama… 7. Harris… 8. Harris… 9. Harris… 10. Travis Etienne, RB, CLEM

These two sites use different algorithms which explains the vast differences. Either way It would not surprise me if none of these happened.

The QB Room

With the recent re-signing of Josh Dobbs, the Steelers’ QB room now has four people. What you should not do is jump to any conclusions. Both Dobbs and Dwayne Haskins have contracts that are very team friendly meaning they can be let go immediately with little to no penalty. Both are aware of this and realize they do not have a guaranteed spot on the roster. Perhaps the wild-card in all of this is Mason Rudolph. He’s in the final year of his contract and that will make him difficult to trade should someone want his services. I’m actually pretty fascinated to see how this works out. Dobbs is Ben Roethlisberger’s ‘go-to guy’ when he comes off the field but what if Haskins shines in Camp and the preseason? This thing isn’t as set in stone as some think it is.
