SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Cutting Board” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

I suppose “cutting board” is a bit harsh but quite frankly there’s nothing like a good cutting board especially for meat but I digress. The ‘cutting’ I’m referring to deals with the players that will be sent packing by the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. While the team officially got off to a fast start with a group being cut already, the bulk of cuts are yet to come. I threw together my final 53-man projection over the weekend and I did in fact have couple of changes from my first version. There is still plenty of time to cover the guys that make the team. Right now we are talking about those already dismissed. Here is the first group released in case you missed this over the weekend. Marcus Baugh TE, Tony Brooks-James RB,  Shakur Brown CB, T.J. Carter DT, Anthony Johnson WR,  Lafayette Pitts CB, Malcolm Pridgeon G, Mathew Sexton WR/PR and Lamont Wade S. Of this particular group I think there’s a strong possibility that Sexton, Johnson, Brown and Wade get offers to be on the Practice Squad. We shall see because there are still a decent number of guys who will get similar opportunities.

Tweet of the Day… See below and below.

Ratbirds

No matter how much I dislike the Baltimore Ravens I never ever cheer for players on that team or any other to get hurt. Football careers are already very short and every single player across 32 different teams is living a dream so when the season-ending injury bug strikes, we shouldn’t celebrate it. The Ratbirds terrific young running back J.K. Dobbins tore his ACL in the team’s final preseason game. He was actually a guy I thought the Steelers were drafting last year when they instead chose Chase Claypool. I hope the young man has a good rehab and recovery going forward. Also, it does make you appreciate Mike Tomlin NOT playing the bulk of our starters Friday night doesn’t it?

The Offense

The old cliche about NFL offenses in the preseason is that they tend to be pretty “vanilla.” Teams don’t want to give their opponents any sort of look into what might be coming whether it be week one or midseason. Matt Canada’s offense, if it was actually possibly, started out “vanilla” and I think regressed to just your basic “plain” by Friday night. It sure seemed to me that with each passing preseason game there was less motion and less movement in each formation pre-snap. I’m hoping that means some serious new looks are coming for week one.

Watt Watch

OK I admit it. My hand is now hovering over the panic button. I really thought this would be done by now and despite some speculation over the weekend it was, there is still nothing on the books as of this writing. There is no way the Steelers can afford to have T.J. Watt holding out as they enter the season. It would be disastrous for the defense and team in general. That said, Kevin Colbert isn’t going to flinch either. He’s been here before as they say. Just got the damn thing done already.

Minkah Payday

With the news that Harrison Smith, the 32-year old safety for the Vikings is getting a four-year $64 million extension, Minkah Fitzpatrick must be hearing “cha-ching” in his sleep. Next year he’ll be up for a new deal and while Smith is really good I don’t see him in Minkah’s category.
