SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Cold Cuts” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Did anyone’s parents or grandparents used to to refer to deli meats like ham, bologna, salami or Turkey as “cold cuts?” Whenever I’d be at my grandparents doing some yard work for them I would go in and have lunch. Cold cuts were always laid out. In this case, the cold cuts I’m referencing are the ones that could be coming for current Pittsburgh Steelers. This is just a preliminary list mind you. The team will enter Training Camp with 90 players and by the end they’ll be down to a 53-man roster and a practice squad. If my math is correct, that means a lot of guys won’t be around. Today’s edition of QH will dive into some guys who may face this unfortunate situation.

Offense

It’s pretty simple at QB. Either Josh Dobbs makes the roster as the third QB or Dwayne Haskins does. At running back, I personally believe Jaylen Samuels’ time is up. He’s just not been the same since he had a knee injury. Benny Snell is also a guy who could be in jeopardy. With the arrival of Kalen Ballage and of course some guy named Najee Harris, I wonder if his time isn’t up.

Word on the street is that tight end Zach Gentry has really improved his blocking and should be the third tight end. That means Kevin Rader would be on the way out. I’m going to need to see Gentry’s improvement for myself. The top four guys at wide receiver are safe in my book and high means the fight for the fifth spot will be a brawl. Ray Ray McCloud would be the favorite but strange things happen in camp.

I don’t know that we’ll see any big names gone from the O-Line. JC Hassenauer could be gone if Kendrick Green performs as expected and B.J. Finney does his thing. Rookie Tackle Dan Moore has a lot of upside but he didn’t have a real solid off-season and may need more time than thought originally.

Tweet of the Day… I have great respect for true, die-hard fans of any team. The ones that irritate me are the ones who claim to be fans but never wear the gear until the team starts to be respectable again. Can’t tell you the number of Browns’ fans I suddenly see out and about. And I find attitudes like this one truly comical.

Defense

While the Steelers made a trade to acquire Wisconsin DL Isaiahh Loudermilk in the draft, that doesn’t guarantee him a roster spot. Based on what I’ve learned though he’s been impressive so far and has a great work ethic that has endeared him to the veterans. Henry Mondeaux is likely a guy that’s on the block.

The outside backer position is fascinating to me. There is literally no depth behind starters T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith and to me that means it’s a good wide open race. Cassius Marsh and rookie Quincy Roche are the favorites but we’ve seen guys come out of nowhere before to claim spots. Inside is also intriguing because we don’t yet know a lot about Buddy Johnson. If he comes on better than expected could Vince Williams be on the cut line? I love VWill and his leadership but being able to make plays is always a trump card.

The name in the secondary I’m keeping an eye on is Justin Layne. Not only has his play not quite reached the level they hoped it would but now he has the off-field issue of a traffic stop and weapons possession. Poor decision-making can often be a determining factor in one’s fate.
