SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Adding Depth” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

It’s truly amazing how quickly things can change. Just a few months ago, there was great concern over the defensive line situation in Pittsburgh. Then Stephon Tuitt retired and things looked even worse. The unit would be relying on Cam Heyward and a 35-year old Tyson Alualu. Everything else was a question mark and in some regards, those questions still exist. Can Isaiahh Loudermilk take the next step? Can Chris Wormley be better against the run? How much can we expect from rookie Demarvin Leal? Those questions were given a boost of confidence with the signing of veteran Larry Ogunjobi yesterday. All jokes aside regarding his first meeting with Mason Rudolph, Ogunjobi immediately upgrades the defensive line. His presence allows for more rotational opportunities which means a better overall experience for everyone. Imagine a fresher Heyward and Alualu for those late game stops… I’m not naive of course and neither should you be. This unit still has much to prove and will need to do that quickly. Give the Steelers and Omar Khan credit for addressing the situation. Ogunjobi still being available at this point obviously means he isn’t perfect but he’s a proven player and that’s what they need right now.

Tweet of the Day… I think this was very predictable. Wherever he starts I think he’s going to be really good.

Claypool

I had some thoughts on Chase Claypool’s comments earlier this week. If you missed it, he claimed he was a “top three wideout in the NFL.” Were his comments really that bad?

The Podcast

The SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc returns tonight. With my son’s tournament run over, I’m back at the helm. There’s plenty to discuss despite this being the so-called “dead period.” We’ll have thoughts on Claypool, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Larry Ogunjobi and my take on St.Louis BBQ. Tune in!!

Thoughts From Around the League

Deshaun Watson settling 20 of the 24 cases against him is likely his team’s way of saying “we’re being proactive.” I think that ship sailed a long time ago however and I anticipate his suspension still being a long one… I think the fact you’ve seen more teams docked OTA sessions for next year because of the abuse of OTA sessions this year, that tells you how little some coaches think about the need for the sessions… Sounds like this is it for ‘Gronk’ and there’s not denying he’s been one of the great tight ends in league history. He tormented us far too long… Ryan Fitzpatrick going to the broadcast booth will be really good. He’s got a great personality and is quick-witted.
