SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for August 31st, 2015

by Steeldad

The final day of August is likely to see the Steelers make their first round of cuts. While they aren’t due until tomorrow, I expect them to come today but I’ve been wrong before.

One spot I know Chris and I are really interested in is at fullback where Roosevelt Nix has posed a strong challenge to incumbent Will Johnson. I know the Steelers have loved Nix’s blocking especially in the red zone but I don’t think it will be enough to unseat Johnson. Still, it’s something to keep an eye on.

I have been trying to stay as patient as possible with Jarvis Jones. I think the term “bust” is often thrown out too soon and I have tried to defend him but after watching his performance against the Bills I’m really starting to wonder if he’s going to ever find his way on the field. He’s missing tackles and getting beat to the outside which is a sin for an outside linebacker.

I was told Lawrence Timmons is fine. He’s been dealing with a bad toe and the Steelers aren’t in any hurry to bring him right back for fear of re-injuring it. The Steelers and “bad toes” have a history of course. It’s what ended the career of Jack Lambert.

The Steelers have to be giving strong consideration to bringing back center Fernando Velasco who released by the Titans. He’s a step up from Doug Legursky and is probably better suited than Cody Wallace is to anchor the line.

Tweet of the Day from Da Beard.

For all the talk of Maurkice Pouncey’s injury, the Michael Vick signing and Martavis Bryant’s pending suspension, all I can say to you is… Be glad you aren’t a Redskins’ fan right now.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, the Steelers drafted Sammie Coates because they had concerns about Bryant. Gerry Dulac confirmed that today.

Have a great Monday Steeler Nation!
