SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “End of Jarvis” Edition

by Steeldad

Good day Steelers’ Fans and Happy Friday!

Sometimes, the news that comes out of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ headquarters is often difficult to understand. So much so you may need some form ‘decoder ring’ to make any sense of it. But then there are times when the news isn’t that difficult and that was the case this week when it came to the outside linebacking situation. Mike Tomlin said that James Harrison and Bud Dupree were “locks” and the remaining three guys needed to sort things out. The bottom line is that Tomlin doesn’t like five man rotations there and that means Jarvis Jones is in trouble. Anthony Chickillo is an arrow pointing up. He just keeps getting better. Arthur Moats can play both sides and is the type of guy you want as a reserve and in the locker room. For Jones, the math just doesn’t add up in his favor. So much so he may not even get a helmet over the last five weeks. Goes without saying his tenure in the ‘burgh has been disappointing and is nearing its’ end.

Don’t be surprised if Sammie Coates makes a big play this week. I’ve been told the splint he’s worn for the last several games is likely coming off his damaged fingers. His ability to get deep in a hurry is incredibly important to this offense in a number of ways.

Someone mentioned this to me on Twitter this week and I think it has merit. Perhaps the Giants will be caught looking ahead to their huge match-up with Dallas next weekend? While I expect no less than the Giants’ best, especially after the Cowboys’ won last night, you can’t discount that factor.

Tweet of the Day… These are the kicks Big Ben will be wearing Sunday.

No word yet on Demarcus Ayres but don’t be surprised if he’s put on the roster in the next 36 hours.

One thing to be very concerned about this week is the Giants’ ability to get to the quarterback late in games. They have done an excellent job of pressuring opposing quarterbacks into poor throws, sacks and interceptions in the second half of games. The Steelers need to match this and protect Ben Roethlisberger.

Know who is due for a big play? William Gay that’s who. He nearly had one on the opening play vs the Colts when he stripped the ball from Scott Tolzien but the Colts got it back. I’m sensing a big interception from the wily veteran.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!

This was a bad pick from the start, I mean he is still crashing the line horizontally every time. I would say what a waste of talent, but truth be told he never had NFL talent from the start.

All right I admit that the pick of Jarvis Jones was bad but honestly how many times have you Steeler fans defended a draft pick only to come to the realization that he ends a bust? It happens to every team and yeah I know not all of the good teams have had bad 1st round picks but there have been times where it has happened to a Packers team or even a Pats team. Now I will say that the Steelers and Steeler fans should focus on Edge rushers early in the 2017 draft and please for all who comment and write for the website don’t say the draft is deep with Edge rushers cause it’s the same thing you guys said about the DL in this years draft and look how that turned out. If there is an edge rusher that can be paired with Dupree and he is a 1st round talent don’t ignore him go and preach for that guy to be taken in your mock drafts.

The 2013 draft is a great illustration of just how far off GM’s and coaches can be when it comes to grading talent. Before this draft the talent pool was considered quite large with talent at every position. Well a few years later it’s pretty evident that this draft was super thin and the Steelers may have stole the best player in the draft with Bell. But when you have a young non-athletic, slow linebacker with questionable strength and a possible spinal problem, it doesn’t take a genius to know to stay away.
